I, for one, am not sure I’ll miss the people threatening to leave. Maybe instead of having the same threads over and over again, we can start having new ones with new people who aren’t dismissed for their lack of posting proficiency. Maybe I won’t have to wait forever for threads to load. I don’t _care_ what happened, I left for a weekend and you all went apeshit. I am glad that this thread is likely going to get shut down…its a waste of bandwidth. Let’s get back to life and messageboard. Post#\<500 UNITE!!! ---

My questions are these: 1. Why has no poster ever been given a 30 day cooling off period instead of a banning? 2. What would have happend if it had been a regular poster doing this and not **Tuba**? ---

I agree that this thread should be locked. The precedent has been passed down from On High, and thus bears no further discussion. Mods, could we sticky this thread until the [Rules](http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/rules.php?) have been amended? I’ll volunteer myself to submit a draft of the new rules; the changes have been bolded: Paragraph Five: You agree, through your use of this service, that you will not use the SDMB to post any material that is knowingly false and/or defamatory, inaccurate, abusive, vulgar, hateful, harassing, obscene, profane, threatening, invasive of a person’s privacy **(however, see below)** or violative of U.S. law. You agree not to post material that in our opinion fosters or promotes activity that is illegal in the U.S. **Certain exceptions can be granted to the stipulation against invading a person’s privacy. If a member’s personal information is contained in an online database, including but not limited to phone books, newspapers, court records, registered sex offender lists, “deadbeat dad” lists and the like, and any data which can be obtained under a Freedom of Information Act request, then the said rule above about invading a person’s privacy can be ignored. We generally frown upon such divulgences, and therefore request that you post it under a recognizible handle (i.e., your SDMB user name) on a site accessed by a sizeable contingent of SDMB members – e.g., LiveJournal, Fathom, UnaBoard, #straightdope, etc. If you make such a post with the stipulation, “Since I cannot post this on the SDMB without violating their user policies, I am posting it here,” you are eligible for this exemption, and your sole punishment shall be a 30-day revocation of your posting privileges.** I know my sentences tend to run on a bit there, and I’m not really good at legalesy-jargon, but that should give us a start until the Rules can be amended. ---

I’m glad exposing the real life name and address of a person in an irrationally hated segment of society and stating (without offering proof) that he was engaging in unethical behaviour doesn’t count as damage. ---

Actually, minty, my biggest concern was not with the revelation of public information but the accusation that what’s-his-face had hit on a Doper he knew was underage. THAT was what was inappropriate and, if true, better handled by law enforcement than on an anonymous message board. And if it wasn’t true it is the most scurrilous form of libel, done anonymously and very publicly, and THAT is grounds for a civil lawsuit. ---

And as a person who’s been under warning to stop discussing something when she was itching to try to explain and/or apologize too, it’s very frustrating to have people dissecting you in the Pit for your mistakes when you’re unable to come in and defend yourself. Perhaps there’s some people here who think TD deserves that feeling; I’m not one of them, but if those people really need a place to vent, this is that place. Just seems…unsporting. ---
