_Ride of the Valkyries_ (Wagner) – nothing better for cranking it up while cruising through a quiet residential area at 2:30 am. _Carmina Burana_ (Orff) – the whole thing. Really freaks out folks at the stoplight when you sing along in Latin. The fourth movement of Beethoven’s _Symphony No 9_ – there’s something liberating about shouting out the word “Gottterfunken” repeatedly. _The Polovtsian Dances_ (Borodin) – music just doesn’t get any better than this (YMMV) _Va, Pensiero_ (Verdi) – Pretty mellow for blasting, but that fortissimo can really stop traffic! _Votre toast (Torreador’s Song)_ (Bizet) – Only if your car can strut, though. Last but not least, the 82nd Airborne Division All-American Chorus’ rendition of _Blood on the Risers_ What? ---

Well, you never hear this on the radio, but I love songs that give instructions. For example, the liner notes Jeff Beck wrote for **Truth** say of _Shapes of Things_: “This must be played at maximum volume whatever phonograph you use.” Likewise, around the edge of the label of the LP **Ogden’s Nut Gone Flake** by the Small Faces appear these words: “For amazing results, this record should be played at maximum volume” ---
