It’s a little late to lobby for stamps, but here are some celebs who will have their centennials in 2003— Vincente Minnelli Adrian Jazz musicians Bix Beiderbecke and Joe Venuti Evelyn Waugh Jeanette MacDonald Lou Gehrig Claudette Colbert Great second bananas Jack Oakie, Elisha Cook, Jr., Una Merkel and “boop-a-doop girl” Helen Kane Curly Howard Claire Luce _and_ Claire Booth Luce! And—kina hora—Bob Hope and Al Hirschfeld might still be around for their centennials! (I think there actually has been a big push for a Beiderbecke stamp.) ---

A slight hijack: I had a Poli Sci professor in college who was Korean and who spoke with a very pronounced, and very stereotypical, accent. He was trying to making a point about Claire Booth Luce being an outspoken advocate and it came out this way: “Crare Boo Ruce bery bocal woomang.” To this day I can’t hear or read her name without thinking of Dr. Yim (and how he always smelled of kimchi). ---
