According to one of the show’s directors, it was originally meant to be spelled WABAC, as a reference to the UNIVAC-I. Mid-century, large-sized computers often had names that ended in ‘AC’ (generally for ‘Automatic/Analogue Computer’ or similar), such as ENIAC or UNIVAC.
Although at no time during the run of the TV segments was it ever explained what it stood for, the 2014 movie, Mr. Peabody and Sherman, finally revealed that the name WABAC is an acronym of ‘Wavelength Acceleration Bidirectional Asynchronous Controller’.

He was always being sent back in time to experience history first-hand, usually as a participant, by his friend, Mr. Wizard, an anthropomorphic lizard with pince-nez glasses, wizard’s robes, and the classical conical wizard’s hat. Of course things would always go pear-shaped, and he would have to call out to be rescued and returned to his own time zone by Mr. Wizard, who would always admonish him, “Be just vhat you is, not vhat you iss not. Folks vhat do this has the happiest lot.” – in a very bad, vaguely Viennese/German accent, if I recall correctly.
