Unfinished business:

If I remember the story correctly, Smurfette wasn’t even a real Smurf but was something Gargamel created to infiltrate the Smurf village and create discord among the other Smurfs so they would destroy themselves. He released Smurfette into the forest, where she was found by one of the Smurfs and and taken to the village.

On orders from Gargamel, Smurfette began making trouble the moment she arrived, provoking and/or causing many problems within the village. In true ‘double agent’ style, she even had a mirror as part of her makeup kit that was actually a transceiver to connect with Gargamel to coordinate her mischief.

Eventually, however, the guilt got to her and she began to have second thoughts. She admitted to have been working for Gargamel, but repented and pleaded that she didn’t want to be evil, so Papa Smurf agreed to magically transform her into a real Smurf – including changing her hair style and color, resulting in the blond-haired Smurfette we have come to visualize.

Since the Smurfs were already there before the appearance of either incarnation of Smurfette, I suppose the real question should be, where did all those little blue dudes come from without any females at all in the village?

-“BB”-

Well, if Papa Smurf has the power to transform non-Smurfs into Smurfs, maybe that’s how they all came about? Sounds kinda like a cult now.

Les Schtroumpfs are Belgian, created in 1958 by cartoonist Peyo. Besides Smurfette, female Smurfs include Sassette and Nanny Smurf. The word “smurf” is the original Dutch translation of the French “schtroumpf”, which, according to Peyo, is a word he invented during a meal with fellow cartoonist [André Franquin] when he could not remember the word salt .
