I’ve never been a fan of reboots or re-writes but Flanagan did a remarkable job building upon Shirley Jackson’s novel, incorporating famous horror authors into his family tale of terror. It avoids the awful jump-scares and buckets of gore so many auteurs employ, making for a slow burn that is deliciously addictive (for me). _Fall of the House of Usher_ employs a similar tactic with a melange of Poe’s work that was enjoyable.
