The wild costumes, the anticipation of picking the wrong door and winning a… donkey. It’s not what the OP described, but it’s one I miss.

I always wondered what would happen if a contestant insisted on collecting their ‘loser’ prize (such as a donkey)?

According to wikipedia, contestants were offered $100 in lieu of the actual prize (a “zonk”), but they could claim the actual prize if they wanted.

Remember that you pay taxes on your ‘winnings’. What’s a donkey worth, anyway?
