Unusual casting that worked

  1. Camryn Manheim in The Pratice

They weren’t looking for an actor “of size,” so to speak, but she got the chance to read for the role by winning a game of cribbage-- surprise! They liked her, cast her, and she won an Emmy.

Unusual casting that worked

  1. Camryn Manheim in The Pratice
  2. Geri Jewell in Deadwood

Born with cerebral palsy, she had a career as a comedian, which was quite unusual in itself. When she helped director David Milch suss out the character of Jewel, a disabled barmaid in the old West, he offered her the part and gave her leeway to write her own dialogue and back story.

Housekeeping-- left a letter out of the word “Practice”

  3. Steven Van Zandt in Sopranos

Steven had never acted before landing the role of consigliere Dante Silvio. Show creator David Chase wrote the part specifically for him.

  4. Frank Silva in Twin Peaks

Silva was not an actor but was part of the crew. David Lynch noticed that he was visible in a mirror after a shot and wrote a character for him into the story.

Oh, yeah-- Killer Bob-- that guy scared the crap out of me!

No reason a deaf person can’t be a top pollster, but it’s not what an audience would typically expect.

  7. Bryan Cranston - Breaking Bad

Cranston was at that point known for being the father in Malcom in the Middle. Vince Gilligan really wanted him but AMC execs weren’t swayed until he showed them the episode he directed that featured Cranston as an anti-Semite whose head exploded.
