There already was some blowback about giving the captain an eleven-year-old daughter and making her a de facto ‘member’ of the ship’s crew (Vicki Stubing, played by Jill Whelen), although she did grow into the role as she became a teenager… however, once they added Ship’s Photographer ‘Ace’ Evans (played by Ted McGinley) EVERYBODY headed for the lifeboats.

It faced the problem that all school- or teen- comedy/dramas do eventually: the kids grow up and graduate. It jumped when Rachel went to New York and new kids were added to the chorus back in Lima. Now, there were two storylines in each episode, only loosely related to each other, and it was difficult to keep up.
