An early example of ‘jumping the shark’ - I was a little kid when he first appeared (heh) and he ruined the show for me.

Chevy Chase got himself kicked off the show because he couldn’t control his asshole self. I tried watching the documentary but gave up after 30 minutes — he’s insufferable.

- [In-show hate:] Poochie (The Simpsons)
Deliberate Cousin Oliver character introduced into the Itchy and Scratchy show, breaking the classic dramaturgical dyad.
NOT IN PLAY: A decade or so ago (probably longer), I read an article about Robbie Rist, the kid who played Cousin Oliver. At the time, he was freelancing this & that. Of his financial situation, he said, “sometimes I’m rich, most of the time I’m broke.” I very much appreciated his honesty.
Today it seems he’s doing better. Pretty consistent voice work, which isn’t Tom Cruise money but it beats slinging hash, one supposes.

- Ricky Stevens (The Partridge Family)
Introduced as the Partridge’s neighbour in the last season, he was a five-year-old with a irritating voice who insisted on singing a song in every episode. The producers must have got an earful from viewers, because Ricky got the Chuck Cunningham treatment: sudden disappearance, and never seen nor spoken of again for the rest of the series run.

There’re three basic tiers (you could nitpick that to 7 or whatever-- bear in mind I said “basic”) of “being an actor.” 1 is stardom; 3 is having a day job and just enough work to break even on your SAG (or equity) dues, maybe a little more, but not near enough to support yourself; and 2 is making a decent living, so that you don’t need a second job, can support your children, etc., but never become famous.
My brother works in Hollywood, and for years, supported himself fully (and well) through CGI work. He started trying to write screenplays about 15 years ago, and only 1 got picked up, but another was bought by someone who adapted it into a graphic novel, and now he writes and edits graphic novels.
Anyway, he knows lots of people in the #2 category, and says there are more people than most realize who work full-time as actors without ever being stars.
Robbie Rist was a regular on both The Brady Bunch, and The Mary Tyler Moore Show, and got more than 15 minutes; even if no one remembers his name, plenty of people remember his face to this day. (“What John Denver probably looked like in the 3rd grade.”)
