TV Binge Watch (Part 3)

Series You Hated as a Kid (but saw a lot of for whatever reason)

  1. American Bandstand
  2. Fame

I never appreciated the stories of high school kids who needed to sing and dance, plus the numbers usually fell into the typical trappings of a musical where when someone sings, everyone in the background jumps in to dance. And it was programmed against something else I wanted to watch, Mork and Mindy I think.

  3. General Hospital

One TV. Two kids. If I wanted to see Star Trek at 4, I had to let my sister watch GH at 3. My first hate-watch (though I probably should have used the time to do my homework).

So imagine little 7-10 year-old Homie, watching cartoons or reruns of Gilligan’s Island or what have you on WGN (Chicago’s UHF station at the time, which was available on cable in Springfield). Seemingly out of nowhere, WGN would switch from what I was enjoying over to this show. I get that WGN served a Black audience too, and was beehoved to provide entertainment for all of its viewers, but damn did I hate that show.

Nitpick: WGN is not a UHF station. It’s always been channel 9, and part of its success stems from how strong and clear the signal was back in the days of rabbit-ears and snow.

Back to the game!

Ya know, I was wondering if I wasn’t getting an over-the-air signal lo those 200 miles away back in the day!

Not my cup of tea at all.

  6. The Waltons

Rest of the fam watched it. I eventually realized each episode would draw out conflict resolution for a whole hour because everybody was too polite to speak up. One episode showed how horrible the new school marm was because she yelled at a girl who wasn’t paying attention. She never knew the previous marm had the girl sit in the front row because she was hard of hearing.

“Hate” is a strong word – I didn’t really like it because seeing Sesame Street-derived characters in a setting with humor I didn’t understand confused the hell out of me. But I watched it at times when nothing else was on. Even as an adult, the show has never grown on me.

Just seemed like a dumb show to me.

Not to be confused with the 1983 Sunbow series, this one was produced by DiC (aka Do it Cheaper) and while the Sunbow series wasn’t exactly high culture, the replacement series had worse writing, worse animation, and worse voice acting. Chris Latta occasionally shines as Cobra Commander and there are a couple of episodes that could have been so much better with a defter touch, but that’s not what Hasbro paid for.

I was glad to see it end.

Pass.
