The prison is atypical, but there are guards, people have numbers, and you can’t just leave. However, I’ll leave it to the OP whether this one counts.

  6. Parks and Recreation - (a two-fer!) Adam Scott and Rob Lowe both joined the cast in the penultimate episode of season two. After Paul Schneider (who?) was jettisoned two episodes later, the ensemble was solidified for the rest of the show’s run, and arguably its best years.

  8. Newhart added Larry, Darryl, and Darryl to the cast for the second season as well as put a character who didn’t work on a bus. The trio plus leaning into a townful of eccentrics played to Bob Newhart getting to be the “one sane guy” on the show.

  9. I prefer the Natalie episodes of Monk to the Sharona episodes. I thought Sharona was the same joke repeated over and over, and it got tiring, while Natalie actually played off the Monk character, and had fresh humor each episode.

  10. MASH - Frank Burns served as a foil for Hawkeye but was such an unlikeable character that Larry Linville eventually decided that he couldn’t do anything more with him. He was replaced by Winchester who was still a foil, but was still a compassionate surgeon and more well-rounded character.

Next: Characters who were put on a bus

  1. Barney Miller - Detective Chano Amenguale disappeared after the second season and wasn’t mentioned until a few years later when a new detective was transferred in.
