Sitcoms that are “other than” workplace, or family centered, however you define it.
- Mom
Started S1 as “family-centered,” and some scenes are at the main character’s workplace, but it quickly ditched the family to focus on a disparate group of friends who support each other through AA recovery. Even lasted a season after losing half the “Mom” pair left. - The Big Bang Theory
The five main characters are all friends, not a family. Four of them work at the same place, and a lot of the comedy takes place at their workplace, but I wouldn’t call it a workplace comedy. - Community
The main characters are a disparate collection of community college students who come together in a study group and have wacky and often surrealistic adventures. - Gilligan’s Island
Seven individuals are shipwrecked, stranded on an uncharted island presumably in the South Pacific. Their attempts to be rescued end in failure, while other stranded persons somehow manage to escape to freedom. - Frasier
There are often scenes set at the radio station where Frasier works, but just as often he’s in his luxury apartment, or his favorite coffeeshop, or other places in and around Seattle. - The Young Ones
Four disparate undergraduate students and roommates – a punk rocker, an anarchist, a hippie, and a “cool guy” – sharing a squalid house and surrealistic adventures in Thatcher-era London. - Wilfred
A timid young man sees a man wearing a dog costume, but everyone else sees the man as a real dog. The man/dog speaks to the young man, often urging him to do outrageous stunts. - Seinfeld
It’s a show about nothing. - Friends
Mainly centered on a group of friends and their relationships, but otherwise hardly easier to qualify than the previous entry. - 227
