Of course, the version done for the movie “And Now For Something Completely Different”, had the unaltered word “cancer”.

Also, when I saw the TV version on the recent “The Best of” shows, “cancer” had been dubbed back in.

It does seem to be only VHS =-=- but it’s not all used. Scroll down to the bottom and you get new ones. It takes a while for all copies to be sold off after Disney stops supplying.

Whether that was for reasons of PC or not I preferred the edit. That treacly sweet fairy tale voice litling along to be replaced out of nowhere by that booming “ **GANGRENE** ”…I find that just hilarious.

“Gangrene” in on the A&E DVD release.

> On a recent viewing of Dumbo I was surprised that the crows were intact (as far as I could tell). I think this is a good thing; they use a vaguely stereotypical black dialect, but are not otherwise negatively portrayed. In fact they are the only characters apart from the mouse to be supportive of Dumbo. And their song is great.

I came into this thread to post about this. _Dumbo_ is a rather depressing, heartbreaking film, and the crows and their song are about the only joyous and worthwhile element to this film, IMO. Certainly the singers who did the voices were tremendously talented.

I haven’t seen _The Three Caballeros_ in ages, so I don’t remember it very clearly. Is it still shown or is it sold on VHS or DVD? I don’t remember anything specifically racist about it, but as I said, the memory is kind of fuzzy. I do remember loving the soaring tenor of whoever provided the voice for the rooster. It would be a shame if this film were swept away for PC purposes.

In Disney’s _Aladdin_, the opening song orginally contained the line: “where they cut off your ear if they don’t like your face / It’s barbaric, but hey, it’s home.” I remember laughing until my sides hurt when I saw the movie at the local cinema. It occurred to me at the time to wonder if sombody in the Magic Kingdom had developed a pair of balls and was going to spurn some of their ridiculous panderings to the PC police.

Seeing as how that line was edited out in the home video release, it would appear that the answer is no.

When Agent Cody Banks came out in theaters, some people were offended by a couple of lines in the movie that described gawky, klutzy Cody as being “in Special Ed”. The studio promised to change the lines, and I believe they were changed for TV and video release. Sorry, no cite.

Personally, I was not offended by the lines - they sounded like what high schoolers would say, and they were funny. And I have two kids who

```auto
are
```

in special ed! But I have a thick skin about this sort of thing.

Geeze, I’m laughing like crazy here at the idea of a penguin being spanked. Especially if you imagine it in _March of the Penguins_, with Morgan Freeman narrating “The father disciplines his child for wandering off of his feet.”

“Bad Pen-Pen! Bad! You want to get frozen to death? You want to be penguin-napped by some strange penguin? Then stay on my feet! No regurgitated fish for you!”

Actually I think this was done because of John Cleese. He’s been quoted time and time again as saying cancer is one thing that should never be joked about or the subject of humor. If I nose around I may find the quote.

> Bill Bryson mentions the show in _Notes From a Small Island_, saying he can’t remember the name, but that calling it _My Neighbour Is A Darkie_ pretty well summed up the plot, context, and motivations of the show, as well as most of the humour…

I’m afraid you’ve got your Brit TV shows mixed up, Martini. \*\*‘Rising Damp’ \*\* was about a boarding house owner (Rigsby) who had two student lodgers one of whom was black. Rigsby wasn’t really racist (and neither was the show) he just tended to believe stereotypes about black people. The students, needless to say, used this to their advantage on numerous occasions.

The show you and Bill Bryson are referring to is an unfunny boil on the backside of British sitcom called **‘Love Thy Neighbour’** and very awful it was - as was another sitcom from the same ‘stable’ called **‘Mind Your Language’**. That one was about evening classes in English and was _full_ of ‘funny foreigners’. :smack:

I don’t _want_ to know if either of those have made it to DVD!

Fox never re-aired the episode of X-files called “Home”.

It’s about a inbred family that keeps their sister-mother under the bed.

The opening pre-credit sequence is these retarded men burying alive a crying baby that had just been born.

Home is (and was) a staple of The X-Files syndication on Sci-Fi, TNT and FX (Fox’s cable arm).

In fact, I see it more than almost any other episode (my favorite episode, with Luke Wilson as a vampire, is the one I happen to catch the most).

I think this is more a case of someone creating a controversey over the fact that Fox didn’t choose to rerun this episode that season. There’s 22 episodes a year, not all of them will be re-run.

Oh my God, this was my son’s favorite movie when he was six. It hasn’t been edited, but there is a lot of stuff in there that is insensitive at best, and some of it is really unbelievable. To begin, if Donald Duck is going to sexually harass Latin women, he should really be wearing pants. In the Brazilian part, they have two men in silhouette doing a dance that looks like fighting (and that you can recognize as a representation of Capoeira), and they are transformed into gamecocks fighting, then back again. The whole thing is like some sort of peyote-induced halluciantion. My son really did get sick of being told about how bad the attitudes were and would eventually just raise his hand and say,“I know, don’t be like this.”

I’ve never seen that episode, but I find it not only hilarious, but Pythonesque, seeing as a number of sketches would, for no apparent reason, cut to a shot of a Viking saying a single word in someone else’s sentence.
