It wasn’t a bad series, it just didn’t catch on.
I first saw her here:
THE BEST OF NEW WAVE THEATRE SPECIAL RHINO 2 DISC SET DVD-R! | DVDRPARTY!
Yet another couple of DVDs I’ll have to fish out… and find time to watch.
If you remember Tales of The Gold Monkey you might also remember the other Raiders of the Lost Ark inspired show that came out that year, Bring 'Em Back Alive.
I don’t remember it, but the protagonist had to be Frank Buck?
EDIT: Yep, I see now I was right!
I knew that one because I remember a comic book (probably Donald Duck or Uncle Scrooge) in which Louie, Dewey, and Huey were threatened by some animal, and one of them said “I want Frank Buck!” I asked my dad who Frank Buck was, and he said “He was a hunter who always brought 'em back alive!”
You are correct.
Funny, I always thought that Kimba was at least as popular as Astro Boy, although I wouldn’t be surprised if most people haven’t heard of it nowadays. If you want to talk about obscure cartoons, then how about The Amazing Three produced by the same guy who did Astro Boy and Kimba.
I distinctly remember Tales of the Gold Monkey, but I have no memory of Bring 'Em Back Alive. A 1930s pulp adventure series would have been (and still would be) right up my alley, and I watched way more prime-time TV than is healthy back then. Maybe I thought it was a “safari” show rather than a pulp adventure show? Or it was on opposite another adventure show?
It was up against Happy Days, Laverne & Shirley, and The A-Team.
Ah, well that explains it, then. In those days, before streaming and DVRs and suchlike, if it was on opposite The A-Team, it might as well not have existed, as far as I was concerned.
Hey, I found it! Thanks for the tips ChockFullOfHeadyGoodness and Johnny_L.A! I’ve looked online a couple of times, and it never occurred to me that it was her real (stage) name.
The show is the one Johnny_L.A referred to (New Wave Theatre) and ran from 1982 to 1984, so a few years later than I thought.
This video includes the opening sequence and is cued to the part I remember:
Nope, but it it was a spinoff.
(It was also, I see, another show with the yellow credits text that I had an earlier thread about.)
I loved Connections when I first saw it but then later saw it (or perhaps the sequel) and thinking that the “connections” were tenuous at best.
Tales of the Gold Monkey caused the sudden death of Mac on Magnum, (because Jeff McCay was a regular on the new show) and the sudden death of TotGM caused the sudden regeneration of “Mac” on Magnum (because Jeff McCay was suddenly unemployed). Both were Bellasario shows.
I hated the Dukes, but I loved Enos. I’m not sure why. Buckle up now!
Here’s a link to New Wave Theater Vol. 1.
Among the gems is Su Tissue and Suburban Lawns performing Janitor. Here it is cued to the song.
And one of my favourite bits, ‘Sri Maharooni Speaks In’
Oh, yeah and there’s also the Surf Punks.
ETA: *heh* Re; Sri Maharooni. ‘You may imagine you are someone you are not, and you may believe it!’ I can think of someone that fits. ![]()
Memory is a funny thing. I would have sworn that character on Tales of the Gold Monkey was played by Bruce McGill, who played MacGyver’s sidekick in a number of episodes of that show; that the character’s name on ToftGM was “Mac”; and that he was basically the same character on both shows. I obviously conflated a number of elements from all three shows to manufacture that memory. (McGill’s character on MacGyver was a sort of retro-pulp bush pilot, which is probably a major reason why I “remembered” him being on TotgM).
Really liked “Gold Monkey”, but it would be hard to watch now due to the lead’s troubles.
Platypus Man with Richard Jeni, thought it was hilarious but unfortunately most people didn’t, only lasted one season.
Most people remember Gerry Anderson’s Thunderbirds and Fireball XL5 (gotta love the opening sequence), but not too many people liked Supercar as much as I did. I wanted a Supercar toy a lot, but never got one. This probably explains much about my current personality.
I don’t remember Supercar, and I don’t have Fireball XL-5; but I do have Stingray, Thunderbirds, U.F.O., and Space: 1999.
Oh, how I wish my wife liked the shows I like!
Gosh, I think I watched an episode of that - but I was going to guess “Carter Country”
