I don’t have a TV, and I’m a huge baseball fan. Fortunately, I can listen to the Giants via the internet. Their radio crew is better than the TV crew, anyway. I’m not as big a football fan, but I do miss watching Niners games. Their radio crew sucks ass, so I’d rather keep track by listening to ESPN on Sundays than try to listen to them via the internet.
MeanOldLady, I’m curious to know if you’ve actually seen any of the shows recommended to you. I’m kind of a culture snob myself, but I think Buffy is a great show. Brilliantly written.
I don’t care for sports. Once in a great while I’ll go to a baseball game, but that’s just about it.
I do understand how a sports fan would want to watch television.
Let me also point out that I do not judge people’s intelligence with regard to their viewing habits. Neither do I brag about mine. (Is not watching television a viewing habit I wonder?)
I’m just happier without television. If I decided to reconnect mine I’d have to make room for it too. Not a big deal, I just don’t have a shelf or anything for it. I’d have to get an antenna as well.
verybdog: You make a good point about spending too much time on the internet, mea culpa, me too. I don’t think I’ll go cold turkey like TV, but I definitely spend too much time on this thing.
Drastic and Max Torque. This SDMB is a confessional of sorts, anonymous, so the truth can be told without personal repercussions. In fact, that’s exactly why I came out of the closet, because that kind of confession cannot be made to someone you know. No one except my wife and kids (they live in the same household after all) know I don’t watch TV, not even extended family or friends.
Why can’t someone make this statement to family, friends or associates? Because with near certainty they’ll know you’re full of it. I’ve heard too many people make a statement like
“Oh, I hardly ever watch TV”, or
“I never turn that thing on”, or
“I don’t watch TV very much because there’s nothing good on” etc. etc blah, blah.
Bull.
They are invariably lying. So why should I make some such statement (except in an anonymous confessional like this bulletin board) when the proper reaction should be just mine: Bull. Because 99% of the time you will be right with the skepticism.
LifeIllustrator: My kids are very much baseball players. Little league and sandlot. So, I, by association, made myself a baseball fan. We usually see several Tigers games at Comerica Park every year. But they invariably lose. I don’t follow any other professional sports at all, and have zero interest.
BTW we went to Ernie Harwall’s farewell game at Comerica Park last year. A couple weeks later my wife and my kids (but not me, unfortunately) met him at a function near our house. He autographed their baseball caps and mitts and briefly chatted with them. What a class guy!
I don’t remember the names. LOL. But I’ve watched it twice and didn’t like it. Don’t ask me why I bothered watching a second time. I don’t usually give second chances.
I’m a Buffy fan, too. It’s well written, but definitely not for everyone. It’s biggest payoff is when you’ve watched it while, get a little investment for the characters.
Anyway, I congratulate you for not watching tv, but I don’t think you need to act like you’re surperior to everyone because you do. It’s a perfectly legitimate art medium, and even if absolutely none of the shows appeal to you, many have pleanty of artistic merit.
I’ve never had cable tv. I have two regular shows – Buffy and 24. Sometimes I’ll watch the Simpsons. I enjoy watching sports, as well.
Sure, a lot of tv is pretty crappy. But I think you could stand to stop painting with such a wide brush.
