There are masterpieces within their genres, but IMHO no other film transcends all others like Casablanca. Casablanca is the Hallelujah Chorus of films. It’s just that one perfect film.
Casablanca
King Kong–established that Cinema could create fantasy, set in the real world. 1st FX spectacular.
When I was in high school I would have said Pierrot le Fou and Casablanca.
But it has been years since I have seen either, and I don’t know how well they would hold up for me. A lot of great movies fall into that category.
So I’ll go with The Seven Samurai and Pulp Fiction, which I have seen more recently.
The best in my mind is a movie you can see again and again and enjoy it each time.
While I respect many choices that have been brought up here, many of them I do not want to watch more than a couple of times a year at best.
*Pulp Fiction, Citizen Kane, Gone with the Wind, Seven Samari, *etc. fall into this category. Very artistic, but a little goes a long way. So to be the best, I have to want to watch it regularly. The two that really stand out for that are:
*Casablanca
The Adventures of Robin Hood *(the one with Errol Flynn)
Casablanca
The Godfather
Honorable mention to Citizen Kane.
The Godfather
Bridge on the River Kwai
12 Angry Men (1957)
Blade Runner
Rudy
Airplane
Five Easy Pieces
