1. I read/heard somewhere recently that the south named battles after the nearest town and the north after nearby water. Thus… Sharpsburg/Antietam and Manassas/Bull Run.

I can’t find any other examples though. Are there any?

1. Why is the Merrimec still called that even after the south captured it, turned it into an ironclad and rechristened it the Virginia? Even Ken Burns’ series referrred to it as the Merrimec.

1. Shiloh/Pittsburg Landing is another contender.

2. ‘Monitor v. Merrimac’ made for better headlines at the time. There’s also some speculation that some northern newspapers refused to honor the rechristening.

I’ve long suspected that the alliteration kept “Monitor vs. Merrimac” alive.
I’ve noticed that , while “Merrimac” was universal when I was a kid, most sources now refer to the ship as the Virginia. But there’s a huge amount of existing material calling the ship “Merrimac”, and change is always a slow process.
