There is historical precedent, of course: a small number of spanish invaders were able to conquor or dominate populous south american civilzations, temporaily at least. ---

Very useful for first contact situations, before the germs have time to work. ---

A small number of conquistadors plus a massive army of local natives who wanted to rebel against the Aztecs. The conquistadors exploited local divisions and used native allies in their conquests, but we just drop their numbers from many of the battles involved. Sort of like how the famous 300 Spartans had 7,000 allies from other Greek city states. ---

AIUI the native civilizations had armies and strategy and discipline, but metal weapons such as swords, knives, and of course muskets, made the local military no match. And diseases spread much faster than you may think. As mentioned, the Spaniards made alliances with foes of the Aztec and the Inca - this takes time, and smallpox is so virulent it spread to distant locations faster. I read many towns and villages were decimated or even wiped-out before anyone there ever heard of or saw a European. ---
