The two rules of witnessing a crime: Get out of there. Call the police. And no cop in the country is going to confront you about not confronting a criminal. Especially one with an ax. ---

I got pilloried in several directions on Facebook a couple weeks ago after posting that I called the police when I saw a locked van in the parking lot, with the engine running and a small child in it. No, I wasn’t going to stick around and witness the fireworks, and while I don’t have kids, I also know that there is NO excuse for that, I don’t care how many kids you have or how little sleep you’ve gotten.
