I knew prison escapes had dropped significantly. But the statistics are almost negligible now. Currently only one escape per 10,000. NY recaptures most escapees in less than a half day.

Ironically, at this point she’s probably hoping the two escapees don’t get caught. Without them, the case against her is probably mostly circumstantial. But if they get caught, the state will make a deal with them to testify against her.

I’m thinking she’s lucky she bailed on driving the getaway car. I’m guessing there’s a pretty good chance they would have killed her once she outlived her usefullness. (In Soviet prison camps in Siberia there was a concept of a “walking supply” when escaping from prison. You convince some stooge fellow prisoner to be part of your escape and if need be you killed and ate him when food ran low.)

But once she did bail, they were kind of winging it after that. It’s surprising that they managed to hold out this long altogether after escaping with no car in a very sparsely populated area (you would think had they stolen a car it would be known by now).

I wonder why there seems to be an assumption that the two guys stayed together after the escape. I would think it would make sense for them to split up so as to be less noticeable.

Steal one from a house whose owners have gone on vacation.
Yes, I should think they would split up.

I assume the state police have already checked every car registered in town, or every car owned by anyone who is a part-time town resident. (Although I doubt that there’s anyone who keeps a second home in Dannemora.)

And I’m wondering at the idea of cutting through the 3/8" thick steel wall with a hacksaw. I imagine they must have needed multiple blades, as each one wore down to nothing.

I’m not so sure it’s a good idea for the police to release to the mass-media that they’re closing in on them (latest: bloodhounds have picked up the trail). I’m as interested as the next guy, but ISTM that this might get them to do something rash and violent.

Perhaps the police know they are somewhere else, and this is an effort to lull them into a false sense of security.

They may be in the woods near the prison. Not getting very far away at all. Not having a get away car pretty much screwed up their escape plans. That lady is lucky she didn’t pick them up. I doubt she would have been left alive for more than a few days.

Or the opposite. They may suspect the escapees are hiding in some garage or barn or someplace like that. Announcing that there’s going to be a search of every building could be an attempt to flush the escapees out into the open by scaring them into trying to make a run for it.

I would say the chances were probably 99.99% that they killed her and took the car as soon as they got somewhere they could dump her body. They probably identified her as a mark who would be susceptible to manipulation if they just laid on some charm and made her feel “special” and like there might be some sort of romantic connection if she helped them. Who knows what they might have promised her. Of course, being sociopaths, it was all a put-on, but it seems to have taken long enough before she finally heard the little warning bells.

At this point, I’m half-expecting that one of them will be found dead after being killed by the other.
