A while ago, there was a link to a petition started on this exact subject. IIRC, the OP was “whooshed” there too. Does anyone remember the link? The comments were _hilarious_. Comedy gold. Tanaqui ---

When you actually looked at the comments, you’d realize that nearly all of them were nasty or snarky. But MSNBC picked it up like it was a real story. ---

The petition is a good thing. It appeared almost as soon as FOTR was out of the theaters. Think of it as a pre-emptive strike against ignorance. Be glad these people got the URL and not someone actually **serious** about this. In other words, _it’s a joke_. ---

I figure by now everyone knows that’s it’s a joke, but for more insight into the mind of the creator of the original petition, check out Kevin Klerck’s [Slashdot posting history](http://slashdot.org/~klerck). Well known for his page-widening posts there, it looks like someone took his [peitiononline.com](http://peitiononline.com) shtick and ran with it. ---

Couldn’t a “whoosh” be considered offensive? I mean, the airplanes that hit the WTC made a whooshing sound. Shouldn’t we stay away from all whooshing sounds from now on? ---

There was a thread about this in Cafe Society a while back. I went poking around on the web and found the home page of the guy who made the “protest” site. I was 99% sure it was a lame joke before I saw his home page and 100% sure afterwards. Among other things, his other site had an extremely long home movie on it of a slug being tortured to death. ---

I say that we eliminate the number 11 altogether, except as a secular sacred number. Children would go from being 10 to 12, buildings wouldn’t have an 11th floor, tenth grade would last two years, November would become the 12th month and December 13th, unless that’s too unlucky and then we could just skip 13 and have December be 14, except Lincoln was shot on April 14th, so that’s not a safe number, but the Ides of March is on the 15, which could be scary, except that Martin Luther King’s birthday was the 15 of January, so is 15 a good number or a bad number? ---

And the number 20, which is of course, the sum of 9 and 11. And the number 1, which after all is very reminiscent of the number 11, which is merely the number 1, twice. Six should be out too, as it is just the number 9, upside down (think about how horribly insensitive the number 6 is!). ---

I just realized that these numbers we’ve been talking about are _Arabic_ numerals! We should stop using them altogether and go back to Roman numerals. Or would that be race profiling?
