why do people always make the opposite topic of popular topics. why do we gotta discuss evrything in every possible way for my next topic “rare sdmb topics” ---

One of the most common Cafe Society thread types is some variation on: **This much-beloved movie/novel/artwork/composition/song/game is utter shite; why am I the only person here who can see that?** Followed by lengthy, self-important “exposure” of said cultural treasure. Alternatively, a brief, snobbish dismissal. Commonly this is followed by indignant defenses, with claims similar to “if you understood it better you’d learn to appreciate it,” which could be specious or not. Neither side is ever persuaded. ---

Posters follow up by mentioning their latest favorite song, which is only vaguely similar, but nobody’s really interested in what the others are posting anyway, least of all the OP. [ul] [li]The **Which Direction Do You Stir Your Coffee–To the Right or to the Left?** poll [/li][/ul]OP creates a poll which is conceivably interesting only in the aggregate, and yet hundreds of posters feel compelled to announce individually how they voted, as though someone were actually paying any attention. ---

How do I persuade [him/her] otherwise? The concensus answers of course being “No, it’s pure shite.” and “It’s hopeless, dump the idiot already.” ---

The **Backward Luddite And Proud Of It** thread Beginning with a misdirected rant about some bit of technological, scientific or social progress that the OP is proud to be resisting. Everybody trips over each other either to try to correct/educate the OP, or chimes in with (often misinformed or otherwise incorrect) supporting complaints. ---

Another one (although this is more about the way discussions progress on the SDMB): \*\*What’s the difference betweeen [item/phenomenon/category A] and [item/phenomenon/category B]? Is A more common than B? \*\* Simple enough question, but in many cases, the thread will dissolve into nitpickery over the slight greyness of the boundary between categories A and B, at which point, someone declares that the question itself is therefore meaningless, ridiculous, naive, racist, etc. Many others follow suit, restating the same dismissal in their own inimitably clever, witty style. ---

[Brief description] Poster B: (if description is detailed). It’ called **Title** (with link) Poster A: That’s it! And in only x minutes. You guys are great! The worst common threads IMHO are the incredibly creepy “polls” or “hypothetical questions” having to do with the details of women’s bodies.
