# U.K. and Irish Dopers, What's Your Local?

I just moved to a new flat and now have the [Duke of York](http://www.fancyapint.com/main_site/thepubs/pubpics/pic1122.jpg) practically on my doorstep. There are about a half-dozen more within a block or so, including [the Larrik](http://img01.beerintheevening.com/09/09b66daaf4f11d740f46c8771a8bcc3c.jpg), where I had a delicious steak sandwich washed down with a Magners last night, and [the Wargrave Arms](http://img01.beerintheevening.com/50/50c998320059a0d9a70d7c3dc94a1a94.jpg), a Young’s pub. Where do other U.K. and Irish Dopers do their drinking?

If I’m in the city centre, my local would be [The Posada](http://www.bbc.co.uk/blackcountry/content/images/2005/05/16/posada_n_carter_470_470x300.jpg) or walking home we might just stop off at the [Combermere](http://images.google.co.uk/imgres?imgurl=http://www.localhistory.scit.wlv.ac.uk/listed/photos/combermere.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.localhistory.scit.wlv.ac.uk/listed/localist/combermere.htm&h=400&w=343&sz=52&hl=en&start=1&um=1&tbnid=pJPNBnnmhGmXGM:&tbnh=124&tbnw=106&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dcombermere%2Barms%26svnum%3D10%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26client%3Dfirefox-a%26rls%3Dorg.mozilla:en-GB:official%26sa%3DG) . Just a few minutes walk from home is the Newhampton Inn, by far the best truly local pub but unfortunately I can’t track down a decent pic.

Well, there’s the [Northumberland Hussar](http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/images/display/36521_b11db777eb5d0e1dc14e981d984d37c0.jpg) not far from where I live, and the [Corner House](http://www.pub-explorer.com/tandw/photo/cornerhousehotelheaton.jpg) a bit farther, next to the bus stop. When I have a pint with colleagues, we usually go to the [Hotspur](http://img01.beerintheevening.com/c9/c962670eb5330a531fd786a7228da635.jpg) (which I don’t particularly love - it’s small, smoky, smelly and has far too few seats) or the [Crow’s Nest](http://www.pubsnewcastle.co.uk/img592.jpg), which I like more, especially because they occasionally show Italian football and they have a pool table.

I’m partial to a pint in [The Marsh Harrier](http://www.bestpubs.co.uk/layout0.asp?pub=122239), and a Friday post-work tipple in [Bar Aroma](http://www.touchoxford.com/business/list/bid/3784890), which is an interesting place with hubbly bubbly pipes, run by some very friendly Albanians.

I always end up at the [Cat & Wheel](http://www.britishpubguide.com/cgi-bin/pubsearch.cgi?results:Bristol:178) though the clientele tend to be slightly straight-laced rugby fans for my taste.
But I prefer [The Beaufort Arms](http://www.britishpubguide.com/cgi-bin/pubsearch.cgi?results:Bristol:152) - good scrumpy, crazy old chaps, decent pool and barely a student in sight.

Can I recomend you try a couple of corking pubs in your vicinity? The Chapel serves great food and The Windsor Castle is the quirkiest small pub you’ll find - the walls are covered with royal memorabilia, it serves passable Thai food and is the spiritual home and regular meeting place of the handlebar moustache club.

Now the [Exeter Hall](http://www.thex.co.uk/contact/eh.jpg), only pub around Florence Park that I’m not slightly scared/disgusted by. But used to like [The Gardener’s Arms](http://www.thegarden-oxford.co.uk/) (great veggie food) & [The Bookbinders](http://fp.martinunderwood.f9.co.uk/Morse/images/Old%20Bookbinders.jpg) back in Jericho.
Hugely useful for anyone outside, or indeed within, Oxford I’m sure 😉

**ScareyFaerie** , the Combermere looks lovely, and I’d love to see the tree growing in the gents! **SanVito** , I’ve had a few late nights in the Chapel, but haven’t yet made it to the Windsor Arms, even though I’ve walked by it about a thousand times. (Since moving to London, not just since I moved into the new flat.) However, I will definitely be trying it now on your recommendation.

Ooh, another Oxonian. Hello! I too am in commuter hell.
I used to go to the Bookbinders quite a lot last year - I lived round the corner and used to lose the trivia on a regular basis. I also liked the Harcourt Arms - bizarre place with crazed looking landlord, but lots of board games and free copies of Private Eye and New Scientist for patrons to read.
I am also a member at QI, which I’ve written about in another thread somewhere.

I’m mostly drinking in [Whelan’s](http://www.whelanslive.com/) nowadays. When the weather is good I can be found sitting outside [Rush](http://www.dublintourist.com/details/rush_bar.shtml) as it’s a nice spot to sit and watch the city go by(great looking women in that area 😉 )

At home, my village has a few pubs: The Balcarress, The Victoria, The Moorgate, The Running Horses, Gerrard Arms and The Queen’s Head.
Sometimes my mates and I drink closer to the town centre, which would mean us drinking in The Millstone or The Bowling Green.
At university, my locals are Drouthy Neebors or The Abbey.

I can’t find any pictures of my local online! Ah well, at least there is some kind of limit to the information society.
Hey **Dominic** , where’s The Abbey? I can’t place it. When I was at uni in Edinburgh I used to drink in Bannermans (and _there_ is a pub that doesn’t hold up well on a later, older wiser visit) and Sneaky Pete’s for a late one.

Both excellent choices! My local is the [Lamb and Flag](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Lamb_and_Flag) on St. Giles, but I’ll often trek up to Jericho for a pint of Stowford Press at the Bookbinders. I’m also quite close to the [Turf](http://www.theturftavern.co.uk/), where the draught Old Rosie makes it worth braving the crowds of exchange students!

My local proper is a Toby Carvery in Wollaton.

I actually walked past the Bell Inn today and noticed it had won the CAMRA Pub of the Year award. I didn’t have time to pop in today, but next time I’m in Nottingham I must give it a try.
