A little Floridian action:

1. Two of the top ten universities in the nation (by enrollment) are in Florida. Name them. Bonus points if you give their exact rankings.

2. Florida was the \_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_ state admitted to the Union (number).

3. Who is generally credited with naming the state “Florida”?

4. The first celebration of Christmas in what would become America took place on the site of this modern town/city c. 1538.

1. Ponce de Leon
2. St. Augustine

All answers to my alphabet soup questions are correct, except that it’s the National Park (not “Parks”) Service.

Presidential wannabes.

1. He lost his race, in part, because an overzealous supporter said the opposition party represented “Rum, Romanism and Rebellion.”
2. This very plump Civil War hero lost to Garfield in 1880.
3. This defeated 1860 candidate went on to serve as a Confederate general.
4. He gave the electrifying “Cross of Gold” speech at a Democratic national convention, leading to a stampede to nominate him.
5. FDR defeated him in 1944, and Truman in 1948.

Correct. **OtakuLoki** also has it right.

**Governor Quinn** is also right as to James G. Blaine.

I know I’ve seen **Paul in Saudi** , among others, use the expression [here](http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showpost.php?p=5867559&postcount=26) on the Dope. It may be old fashioned, but it’s still getting used.
