You are right about Ashokan Farewell. The song was written for New England folk dance camps. The song is about meeting and then saying good bye to old friends. Ashoka is in upstate New York, which is why I asked **Saratoga Sam**.

Sheesh, I should pay more attention to local geography…

[QUOTE=5 time champ]
868. What was a Nantucket Sleigh Ride?

2. A Nantucket Sleigh Ride was what happened when the first harpoon went into a while, during a whaling hunt. The whale would take off, and since the harpoon was tied to the whaleboat, the whaleboat would be pulled along by the whale.

It was dangerous, and very exciting. Esp. with a deep diving species, like the sperm whale, the risk was that the whale would drag the boat under.

1. These were rifles. I can’t recall why Beecher was shipping them in crates marked Bibles, but…

1. Correct, Nantucket Sleigh Ride was also a song by Mountain. That’s where I fist heard of it.

2. Rev. Henry Beecher, father of Harriet Beecher Stowe, was sending those rifles to Bleeding Kansas, IIRC.
