Prostitute activists often comment on how criminalizing them only succeeds in driving them into the fringes which makes them more vulnerable, and also how people won’t respect that many have decided to do sex work by their own volition, because they like it or feel empowered by it. Rather they are mainly viewed as exploited, damaged victims in need of rescue, and only involved in sex work out of poverty, desperation, and/or from being forced into it.

In some cases this probably is the situation, for example the underaged prostitute; but the UGA Professor’s circumstance may be more illustrative of how an intelligent and financially secure sex worker took up this side job possibly because he (heaven forbid) really enjoyed it.

And I imagine that he will probably be made to suffer a very harsh punishment as demanded by a society which can never realistically halt prostitution, yet will refuse to view the sex worker as a regular human being who is doing a valuable and in demand service.

Transsexual prostitutes are very common, and actually quite popular. They are open about their identity and don’t conceal the fact that they have a cock. Most of their clients pay extra for that.

**'luc** , honey, surely you know what transvestites and transsexuals are? This guy, according to the OP’s link, ran an ad in the section for transsexual escort services (which apparently included pre-op/transvestite prostitutes as well) on that website.

Presumably anybody who answered Prof. Reinhart’s ad pretty much knew what to expect in terms of his presenting gender and his sexual equipment.

As for this case, I agree that our prostitution laws are not optimal but I don’t think they’re especially draconian, and an educated man of the world like Prof. Reinhart certainly knew the risks when he decided to take his chances in prostitution.

I’ll save my outrage, if any, to use if the University makes a really lousy disciplinary-action decision.

And I have to join the widespread puzzlement about why the guy was charging money and thus rendering himself liable to criminal charges. AFAICT, if he just wanted to hook up with strangers for free there wouldn’t be a damn thing the law could do about it. Why risk arrest and jail for a measly 60 bucks?

UGA’s student newspaper, _The Red and Black_ has found a photo of him. [Wow](http://www.redandblack.com/news/uga-professor-charged-with-prostitution-keeping-a-place-of-prostitution/article_4c56e854-b17c-11e1-80a3-001a4bcf6878.html?mode=image&photo=0). No wonder he only charged 60 bucks.

I don’t think UGA even needs any moral clause to dismiss him. The man’s job is to teach undergrads, and there is no way in hell his students will take him seriously after this story and that photo. And remember, that photo was posted by the student newspaper. How is he going to run class after _that_?

Heh, he does make one ugly, ugly woman.

By saying, if any of the students bring it up, “That topic’s not relevant to the subject matter of this course”.

If necessary, he could mention the fact that some of his students have embarrassing photos of their own various indiscreet escapades accessible to public viewing as well, but that in his professional role as a teacher he ignores information about his students’ sex lives because it’s none of his business, and he expects them to do the same.
Mind you, I’m not asserting that the University won’t dismiss Prof. Reinhart or even that it won’t be within its rights to do so, especially considering the criminal-violation aspect of his actions.

I’m just pointing out that your initial assertion that the University doesn’t need any specific justification for removing him, beyond the mere fact of the scandal itself, is bullshit. No, it damn well is **not** sufficient grounds for dismissal for an academic employer to say to a tenured faculty member “Oops, your private life has become a source of embarrassing controversy and this will interfere with your authority in the classroom, so out you go.” That would be lawsuit city.

How dumb and stupid does a professor have to be to sell his or herself, and risk losing his high paying academic job? I agree with some posters that he may have done it for the kicks.

There was a scandal of a professor in the university school system I attended. Never attend ( or been) to CSU San Bernardino or had the professor as a teacher. Here is a link another scandal of professors acting bad and well…not too bright. Involing the crime of being a motorcycle gang leader and selling meth. Enjoy XD

I figured out your true meaning from the context.

But, as I said, it’s not an issue I want to get sidetracked on.

I think you’re right. I honestly didn’t think of the tenure aspect. That does make getting rid of him a bit more problematic, to say the least.

Especially considering that one of the main **purposes** of academic tenure is to protect academic freedom by shielding tenured faculty from the reflexive “hot potato” response to scandal, controversy and outrage.

Like I said, though, I don’t think that tenure is or ought to be legitimately used as a shield for **criminal** behavior. My bet is that since Prof. Reinhart is 65, the solution will take the form of some very swift retirement-package negotiations which will result in his never being seen on campus again while not being officially severed from the University.

Again, I think you are dead right there. 10 to 1, nay… _fifty_ to 1 that that is exactly what happens.

60 bucks? I think that’s a nominal fee: an ad for free, NSA sex attracts responses from flakes who don’t show up. A nominal fee puts some skin on the game. But it also puts the person who placed the ad on the wrong side of the legal system.

If I were to respond to an NSA, non-commercial craigslist ad, with the stipulation that we split the $120 room cost, would that be prostitution? If I hit it off at a bar or party with someone, and we agreed to get a room; in the eyes of the CJ system would the first one of us who suggested we split the cost be a prostitute and the other be the John?

I found [this link](http://abcnews.go.com/US/video/uga-professor-arrested-prostitution-16532308) which has a video of some reporters confronting him at his house. In the video, he mentions that his wife died recently and implies that this is his coping mechanism. Again, because I know him a bit personally I absolutely believe him, but I think it makes him look to the general public like he is trying to exploit his wife’s death for cheap sympathy

I think he only teaches upper-level courses, so he would be teaching mostly to German majors/minors and grad students in German and other languages, so he might be spared a bit of the humiliation in that respect, as that is a group who is overall fairly liberal . . . although again UGA is very conservative overall.

I always found him [fairly good-looking.](http://www.gsstudies.uga.edu/faculty/reinhart.html) As a man. As a woman, yeah . . . not so much.

Beauty in eye of beholder, and all that. It’s always been my impression that men who patronize transvestite sex workers don’t **want** them to look **exactly** like women, and not just in the genital area, either.

Part of the appeal seems to be in the contrast of extremely feminine makeup, froufrou clothing styles, etc., with the more rugged or harsh look of the underlying masculine features and body.

I personally don’t understand this appeal at all, but hey, whatever turns you on. My point is that a man dressed as a woman may be conventionally unattractive when considered as a woman but quite attractive as a transvestite.
