Yeah, you catch anything going when you’re having chemo. My wife got it on her toenails and fingernails both. It took a while to beat that one down.

Okay…I don’t get this. Are the spores from nail fungus floating around in such abundance that they can land on someone with no open wounds and infect them just because their resistance is compromised? Or are you saying she got it at a salon while she was being treated with chemo?
(Incidently, I hope everything turned out ok for her.)

Good question about the spores floating around. I don’t really know. We’re in Saudi so she never went to any nail salons, I know that much. It does seem like the spores are all over the place though. She got the nail problem plus thrush plus vaginal candidiasis and I think all of these are the same fungus, just happening in different spots. As far as the nails go, like many women she spent a lot of time fiddling with her cuticles and things so maybe that had something to do with it.
Thank you for the good wishes but unfortunately she died on December 12th after fighting stage IV thymoma for six years. I think it was a relief for her by then.
Thanks again

Nail fungus is usually Trichophyton rubrum, or other trichophyton species. Vaginal candidiasis is generally caused by various candida species.
Both trichophyton and candida are always floating around in the environment. So everyone is always exposed to it. The immunosuppressed are more likely to get it, but coming down with it doesn’t automatically mean that there’s an underlying illness either.

I’m very sorry to hear that. My condolences to you and yours.

Thank you. Apologies for mentioning it. It’s just something overwhelming at the moment.

No charge.
Condolences.
My young nephew (10) has been diagnosed with “Twenty-nail Dystrophy.” It may or may not be a fungus (his has been determined to be non-fungal) but it sure looks nasty. He has a note on file with his school saying that it isn’t contagious. All the nails become ridged, discolored (often brown & black) and it looks just plain nasty! The bad part is, it can take several years for it to clear up, and there seems to be little you can do to rush the process.
Even if your customer’s condition is due to a fungus, chances are it’s not very contagious, if at all.
