UHAUL! *shakes fist angrily*

Ok, I am still so pissed off. So pissed off.

I’ve called every truck place in the greater DC area. I even called a place in Landover,MD and a place in Lorton, VA.

No trucks.

UHaul is still fucking me up the ass with a foot long spiked dildo.

No trucks, no trucks at all. I don’t know what I am going to do short of calling all the moving companies in the phone book tomorrow and having someone come here and move this all themselves.

I’m going to write a strongly worded letter, but right now all I can do is sit in my room, look at all my boxes, and cry.

:frowning:

Care to post their phone number or at least their store number? I’d be happy to make a call to the 800 number and inform Corporate that the actions of their franchise are the reason I will not be using them next month to move my mom.

hit em where it hurts, Hell I’ll send them the invoice for the other company I use and show them a direct consequence!

Remember what I said about the lawsuit.

Also, I don’t know how much stuff you have and how far you’re going, but most car rental places usually have cargo vans and the like available as well. And since they’re pretty low-demand, they’re usually in-stock. I once got stuck driving one for a week after some idiot totalled my car, because it was the only thing the local Enterprise had available. It’ll take a few extra trips, but it’s better than nothing.

Their customer service number from their website is 1-800-789-3638

The specific store that is screwing me hard is the Merrifield Store in Falls Church, VA on Gallows Road. But I think that UHAUL Corporate is at fault. This is no fucking way to run a company.

So stressed…

OpalCat and I were on the phone for well over an hour trying to find a truck for her loads on Saturday. We found one at a local chain place, Cenit Rent-A-Car. A 15’ long cube van. Good luck!

Have you checked Penske? Last two times I rented a truck, it was from Penske (their website is through Budget). Beautiful new trucks, helpful, friendly people, everything ready exactly when and where it was supposed to be, no problems whatsoever. Check their website, find the local places, and start calling them. Oh, and their prices were SIGNIFICANTLY lower than ScrewUHaul.

I hope it works out! If all else fails, do you have a couple of friends with pickup trucks?

(Tried to respond earlier, but reply got hung up)

I have had similar nightmares with UHauls in the DC area. The only helpful one I have found is up on New Hampshire Ave, about a mile or so north of the DC border.

It’s probably no big help, but I’ve had much better success in renting trailers than renting trucks. Of course, that only helps if you have access to a car with a ball hitch… but it’s something to think about.

As a last ditch alternative, car rental places can often hook you up with a pickup or a minivan. More expensive than UHaul, but hey - they’ve got wheels.

Good luck and hang in there.

Good Lord!

My GF is moving on Friday, and she rented a truck from U-Haul as well. Let’s hope all goes well, although this thread certainly isn’t encouraging.

How the hell can they do this??

Personally, if I found out they cancelled my reservation a day before having to move without informing me, I’d hire a professional moving company and send U-Haul the bill, along with a letter stating that they’d be sued back into the stone age if they didn’t pay for it.

Is there anything in their fine print stating this sort of behaviour is normal?

Their “agreements” are so many pages of fine print that your rental time would be up by the time you finish reading them.

Obviously they can do it. With impunity. Or else how could they still be in business?

Ah, the delights of corporate America – all the profit and none of the responsibility!

I’m moving in a few weeks… I hope they don’t do this to me :s

You’ve read this thread and you’re going to use them???

good luck!!

Thanks Ravenman, called them… no trucks! I don’t have a hitch on my car and I have a very small car that will in no way hold the queen size bed, two couches, armchair and various other crap that I need to move… um… TODAY!

I am going to go personally to all the Uhauls today and see if someone can take pity on me and get me a truck… I’m sure once they see how cute and pathetic I am, they will magically find a truck for me…

Then I’m going to spend what little money I have on whatever moving company can come out.

I’m honestly appalled at this.

I’ve used U-Haul in the past, for local moves, and didn’t have a problem. I always dealt with the local U-Haul rent-a-center, though, not going through the corporate 800 number; maybe that makes a difference?

One note: Many of the local U-Haul rental places that I’ve seen are, for lack of a better term, dumps. (Sometimes literally.) U-Haul is not their main business; it’s obvious a garage owner/mini-storage facility owner/what-have-you purchased a U-Haul franchise as an afterthought. I seriously doubt many of these folks have any experience in the reservation field, or know jack-squat about how to run that type of business.

Regardless, it sounds like one of two things (or maybe both) are happening here:

  1. Corporate U-Haul gets a call, makes a truck reservation, and then either doesn’t pass it along to the local franchise or the local franchise loses it.

  2. Corporate U-Haul and/or the local franchises are intentionally cancelling these reservations and keeping the $5 fee as a no-cost way of doing business. This is incredibly short-sighted, but based on the other information seen in this thread I wouldn’t put it past them.

Good luck, tramp. Wish I could help.

tramp, seriously, if you can move this weekend, my dad has a tiny 4x8 trailer that you’re welcome to borrow if you can come down to Richmond and get it. It may not hold much, but it’ll help you move the big pieces of furniture. It’s uncovered, however.

Wish I could be of more help:(. This sucks.

Ava

I read this thread all the way to the end, and I cannot believe the number of you that have had probs with U-Haul. Would it help if the lot of us called that number in support of tramp?

If that 5 bucks is non-refundable and they don’t give you a truck, couldn’t some sort of class-action suit be brought against them? I mean, you basically just gave them 5 dollars and got zero in return, right?

I have had no dealings with U-Haul, but I’m very upset that some of our members are being treated this way!

You’ll be in my thoughts tramp. God, I hope everything works out for you!

I would like to take this time to thank my parents for owning a truck and graciously agreeing to use it to help me move this weekend. Let’s all thank our truck-owning relatives for their generosity and kindness when they help us move. If you own a truck and use it to help others move, pat yourself on the back. Truly, you are the salt of the earth. (And not in that nasty Rome-destroying-Carthage way, either.)

Okay. I just called that number myself and gave them a piece of my mind and told them that I would tell as many people within my circle as possible to go elsewhere for their rental trucks/trailers.

If you decide to call too, you can expect to wait at least 10 minutes on hold.

I’ve had mixed results, but will not likely ever use them again.

My move from Ohio State to Toledo, with a medium sized truck & a car-hauler went off without a hitch (no pun intended), but the 26’ truck I reserved a few months back to load up a unch of stuff from my parnets house before they moved was mess.

I reserved it online, so I had confirmation numbers and documentation and all that jazz. Come the day of the pick-up, no truck. There just wasn’t one available in the entire Dayton area. Fine, find me one in Columbus or Cincinnati. No good. Nothing.

I called the regional office and was told they would contact me first thing in the morning, as it was now a little after 8PM. I called them at 8 the next morning and continued to call both the regional office and the local dealer once an hour until 1 that afternoon, when I just drove to the local place and saw that they had three, THREE 26’ trucks sitting in their lot. 'Course, those were reserved, and therefor not available. Pointing out that I had a reservation got me nowhere.

Pissed, I went out for some lunch and got a cal about a half hour later saying that they had my truck. Sure enough, it was one of the ones on the lot.

That truck ended up having a battery problem that night so when I called them about that, they told me there would be a mechanic out first thing Sunday morning. To their credit, one did call around 8:30 Sunday morning, but we had already jumped the engine and it was running so I told them not to come out. The guy called again Monday after noon asking if I still needed him to come out.

Nope, won;t be using them again, even if they were almost half the cost of Hertz-Penske.

BlackLabel, for your own good, have a backup option available, and call the U-haul place a bunch of times to make sure they actually will have a truck.

The last time I went to rent one, the U-haul place refused to guarantee that they’d have a truck, so I went with Budget instead. That went off without a hitch… ha!
