In Wisconsin, most of the Madison TV stations were on UHF (except for Channel 3), presumably because Madison was too close to the VHF dominated Milwaukee market (and perhaps even Chicago was too close for FCC rules on interference) Where I grew up in the Green Bay media market, it was the traditional setup. 2, 5, 11 on VHF were the big network stations, 26 and 38 were the independent and PBS station on UHF.

Yep. We lived 60 miles north of Madison, and had only a B&W VHF-only TV, and a really crappy antenna. From my earliest viewing memories (1965 until about 1971), all I knew was CBS.

The we got a big TV antenna and all the glorious multi-network Green Bay broadcasts were now available! And Wausau’s bonus CBS and ABC channels, just in case there was a blackout of the Packers game.

I grew up about 40 miles from Madison so we got Milwaukee stations also and if you set the antenna just right stations from Rockford Illinois also

Likewise; I was in high school at that time. We lived only a couple of miles from their transmitter, and their signal was still horrible at first. Mostly, I remember them running the Richard Simmons show a lot, which was awesomely campy.
