If you call Ken boring he will sue you! He has before!
I miss Curly myself.
And now the old stuff is back on I miss Terry and I reallllllllllllly miss Hilda!

But don’t treat Coronation Street as if it is real life. This is the place where people can buy and sell houses in a few days when in reality it takes a least two months. It is the place where you can become the manager of a travel agency , the owner of a pub , or a fully skilled machinist without any previous experience . And where everyone seems to have slept with everyone else in the street .
Now see that’s where Corro has gone all wrong. Watching the old stuff again…well it was all possible. It’s gone down the “young and restless” path now.
Shit the old stuff is good though. Nothing the neighbours wern’t doing.
Ooook, so I am off the board for a day and I come back and you are all arguing about some TV show and the TV licence [?] drama continues.
betenoir, not that this will make you feel any better, but I can’t work on my visa (or at least it must be ‘authorised’ whatever that means…by whom? anyone?).
But yes, I will be bothering you all [I strained not to type “y’all” which, sadly I have been known to say despite never having been to the Deep South, unless you count Florida] for at least two years. Possibly more!
I have a really mundane Q: a) is there a dry cleaners in Oxford? and b) is it affordable?
Slightly less mundane, since I need to buy various electrical appliances that could be somewhat heavy, and I will be carless: what is the situation with Electronics Stores? Is there something in Oxford for repairs and purchases of things such as TVs, transformers, etc.? Also hairdryers.
I am far too thrilled at the continued health of this thread. I should be packing. But I hate packing.
Cheers,
Daphne
I’m not sure you’re entirely correct: the key is whether you can use it to receive a TV signal. So you can have a TV as long as it doesn’t have a receiver / tuner. This is why you don’t need a license for computer monitors - although if you watch streaming video over he internet, you actually do need a license.
So if I were to hook up a DVD player and a plasma display with just a SCART socket, I would not need a license. Add in the Freeview box and now I need a license.
There’s at least one dry cleaners, on New Inn Hall Street near the Student Union Offices and Bonn Square. I think it’s priced at something like £2-4 an item, but it’s been a while since I’ve used it.
Plenty of electronics stores as well, certainly selling TVs and hairdryers. You can have a look at the selection for one on this link. (Argos). If you’re not into catalogue shopping, there’s also a more conventional high-street electronics store, Dixon’s, located in the Clarendon Centre off of Cornmarket. Transformers may be more difficult to locate - when we moved over from the US, my father built his own transformers for the few things we brought (a television, Christmas lights and Mom’s sewing machines). There may be an easy way to get them, but I don’t know what it is. I don’t know of anywhere that will do electronics repairs off hand, but I suspect there’ll be a shop on Cowley Road.
You can buy these transformers from a company called Maplin Electronics. They are a mail order company but they deliver usually by return post . They are a very reliable outfit and I have been buying stuff off them for years. Here is the transformer in question :-

I think there might be problems with that link. In case there is ,go to www.maplin.co.uk and go to product codes VR03D or VR05F.
That link takes me to a thermometer… which could be useful, of couse, converting Fahrenheit to Celsius and vice versa, but not in coverting voltage… I think, anyway.
Thanks for the info, Quiz (may I call you Quiz?).
And apropos of nothing, I nevertheless feel compelled to announce that today is my birthday. Yay!
And I am leaving in 6 days! Eek!
Cheers,
Daphne
As I thought ,so if you type in VR03D or VR05F in the “product search” box in the top left-hand corner it should take you to correct product.
Ah! Got it now. Thanks!
