Indeed, **Chicky**. Although I saw it only through the glazed and slightly disorientated spectrum of a freebie weekend during the festival, I do agree about Wells. 1000+ year-old Cathedral at the top of the High Street, and all the expected trimmings, yet curiously in a pint-sized town . . . I have to say, lovely as Glastonbury sounds, I’m still leaning towards Bath. There’s a direct train from Reading and I’ve never been there before, whereas I visited Glastonbury as a nipper. Anyone know a decent pub/restaurant where a young lady of good virtue might sup a pint and read in peace? ---

Just as a test, I would like to point out that Bath and Wells are next door to each other, so you can do both! Excellent, eh? As for where a young lady of good virtue might sup a pint and read in peace - I’m afraid you’ve got me there, I only answer questions in which I can visualise myself as the protagonist!! ---

Another vote (coming in from across the pond) for Bath. Also, **please** try to make a side-trip to Wells if you’ve never been before. You’d need to take the First Badger Line bus #173 from Bath, timetable available from [this page](http://www.firstbadgerline.co.uk/mendip/indexf.htm). The bus trip is about 75min each way, but the ride through the Mendips should be suitably scenic. Wells Cathedral is **stunning**! Without a doubt one of my favorite buildings anywhere. [Here](http://www.wellscathedral.org.uk/history/architecture/westfront.shtml) is the West Front (1209-1250), with nearly 300 medieval statues still standing. The unique [scissor arch](http://www.wellscathedral.org.uk/history/presentbuilding/originalbuilding.shtml) and 14th Cent. [Astronomical Clock](http://www.wellscathedral.org.uk/history/presentbuilding/theclock.shtml) (with earth at the center, of course!) are just glorious, as is the octagonal chapter house. The cathedral close (with swans that ring a bell for food) is charming. I seem to remember some good pubs there, too. The city of Wells is so small, everything is within a short walk. Have fun this weekend, whatever you end up doing! I shall now cease channeling the Wells Chamber of Commerce. ---

There’s been a change of plan - I have American guests this weekend. None other than our esteemed fellow doper **EnderW25** and his friend. They’re in the country at the end of a European trip. And since they started out the trip from my house, they might as well come back and finish it here 🙂 I may take them into London to show them the best bits the tourists don’t usually go to, or perhaps Oxford. Marvellous. Anyone wanting to pop down for a pint is welcome. ---
