I would recommend a city such as Hull, Lincoln, Grimsby or Manchester.
Well you could get most of Grimsby by swapping for a Barbie Sisters Glam Camper, and probably all of it - if you don’t take it out of the box
And you have to consider the weather; it could be Sunni or Shi’ite
I live in Hitchin. Weird, I never thought I’d see my home-town mentioned on the SDMB…
It has everything on the list, except for 4G - which I’m not sure about. Plus, while this corner of Hertfordshire is probably cheaper than where you (OP) are now, it is still in the home counties, and it’s a commuter town into London - so you’ll be paying a premium for that. That said, the town centre is pretty, the people are nice, there is pleasant countryside nearby, London’s half an hour away on the train, and you’re a stone’s throw from the A1 and M1.
Come to think of it, I should probably appreciate this place more than I do…
move to canada
it is very nice
so beautiful this time of year
you like it
I’ve just come back from a weekend in Wells, Somerset. Gorgeous - Shepton Mallet, Glastonbury, all around there … get a lot for your money.
Nearest train station is Castle Cary - approx 2:30 from Paddington.
Wales is turning into some kind of mountain bike paradise atm, south Wales esp. Going south, not far from Weymouth for sailing. North is Bristol,Bath, Weston Super Mare … take me with you
Going on what houses around here are selling for I figure my little 3-bed mid-terrace could go for 250k - 270k. If I could find a detached or semi for around 150k then there’d be another 100k for the retirement fund.
That gives you plenty of choice, apart from the home counties.
You can pretty much draw a circle around London of around 75-80 miles and forget it.
Cotswolds - nope.
You may well get something very rural in Hampshire, but will not be what you want - too far from a town.
I can only speak for Yorkshire, but all the places I suggest would fit in, make sure to leave a wide berth around Harrogate, Durham would be very good - lovely countryside and the folk are not too insular.
I wonder what Malton would be like, nice enough place but likely a bit pricey and not that great for the eating out.
Wetherby would do the job very well, and its in easy reach of York, Leeds, Harrogate and although its a little more expensive for living costs than other Yorkshire towns, its not going to be outrageous, and will be cheaper than you are used to.
I think you would want a 365 place, and not somewhere good for 2 seasons so that’s why I think some places such as Helmsley would be out.
One place I forgot to mention, Thirsk, has a railway station and a good place to centre yourself for wider travel.
York would be doable, but with £150k you’re going to have to be selective - avoid Tang Hall.
Couple of other good suggestions, Pocklington - this is a place I like myself and Market Weighton.
Beverly should be a better place than it actually is, nice little market town but somehow its on the way to other places, rather than somewhere to live.
You could get this place in Berwick-Upon-Tweed for £150,000! It’s looks to be very central.
Berwick’s got most of the things you’re after, I think, but it can be bitterly cold in winter. Or at least it was any time I was there; it’s the winds straight off the North Sea.
It’s on the main London/Edinburgh rail route, and the Borders are just upstream!
£150K-£200K will get you 2-3 bedrooms in Peterhead and 3-5 in Fraserburgh. A bit over £125K will get you this 2 bed cottage in Banff, complete with huge netting shed.
Actually, the North Sea coast is pretty good temperature-wise because of the North Sea. Snow is rare here in Aberdeen. There were a few flakes but it didn’t settle yesterday, for instance. Inland is another matter, of course! The wind isn’t a problem if you have double glazing and put a coat on when you go out.
The only downside, and it’s a pretty major one, is that you are living in Peterhead.
