I think everyone’s fertility should be turned off at birth. It will automatically be turned on again when both partners go to a doctor and state that they both WANT the child and have a reasonable plan to care for the child.

It wouldn’t solve everything, but it would help.

I’m a pretty PC guy. In fact, other than my belief that an army of unstoppable Aryan supermen should sweep across the globe exterminating or subjugating the lesser races, I can’t think of a single non PC belief I have.

An outstanding idea and one I can definitely agree with.

The problem with “PC” is that what is “P” depends on where, and when you are standing.

In retrospect, everyone and everything is both “PC” and “un-PC” if you wait long enough.

Right. I think if PC ever had any particular meaning it was lost a long time ago, and when the term is invoked today, it’s often a preemptive excuse: it’s means ‘you know I’m right, but you won’t admit it because you’re afraid someone else will criticize you.’ I don’t think I’ve seen a single correct statement in this thread so far, but it’s not because I value being PC - it’s because I think all these comments are factually wrong.

Sometimes you need to smack a bitch. Of either sex. I agree with other posters that while not a societal cure-all, a lot of the worst behaviour we see would be mitigated by knowing that your actions could well earn you a direct and unpleasant consequence.

Perhaps some examples and reasons why you disagree might help.

Personally, I disagree that Un-PC means “you know I’m right, but you won’t admit it because you’re afraid someone else will criticise you.” To me, it means an unpopular opinion that goes against the current (often “trendy”) thinking on a particular issue.

I don’t expect other people to agree that there are places in the world that really were better off under Colonial rule or that young, trendy, twentysomething women have far too much influence over the media and society- but that doesn’t automatically make those points of view incorrect in and of itself.

**Martini** , political correctness has to do with a fear of offending someone. You’re afraid that someone might be offended by your describing a person as black? No problem! You call them a “person of African descent”! You’re afraid that you’ll offend women by saying fireman? No problem- he’s now a “firefighter”! She isn’t Indian, she’s Native American. He’s not crippled, he’s handicapped! Or wait, no, he’s _handicapable_!

I’m being politically correct right now. See how I threw in a female example (the Native American)?

1. Incident-related humiliation is good for kids. If they do something wrong a little shame goes further than corporal punishment or “time outs” to correct bad behavior.

1a. Self esteem is built by succeeding when challenged not by doing the minimum and having someone tell you they are proud you tried.

1b. Winning and losing are habits learned early. Celebrate the winners to give the losers incentive to try harder and reach their full potential. Keep score in little league games, give real meaningful grades, reward and recognize achievement.

1. The melting pot is misunderstood. Its a metallurical metaphor. Different ingredients enter the pot and strengthen the resulting metal, but you can’t see the different ingredients within the metal. Incorporating rather than remaining separate makes us stronger and better able to deal with adversity. Bring what you have to offer, but incoporate it into the existing American culture.

Inspired by the melting pot… I am against complete multiculturalism everywhere, because eventually the cultures blend and merge and everyone is more or less the same. I _like_ having parts of the world where people are different; and that includes having big pockets of white-bread America, which is just as much an ethnic and cultural group as anyone else.

You _can’t_ be or do anything you want to. Not every kid can grow up to be an astronaut, the president, an Olympic sprinter or world-class mathematician.

Better to find something you _are_ good at, and get to be as good at that thing as you can be.

I have a doubly-incorrect viewpoint. I’m a moderate on abortion.

Wait, there’s more. Yes, this by itself makes me hated by %80 of the population. But, I’m moderate because I can’t decide whether personhood should be invoked 6 months into the pregnancy or 6 months _after_ the pregnancy.

I agree, except that “multiculturalism” _means_ tolerating cultural differences–accommodating, not (necessarily) assimilating. I am _for_ multiculturalism _because_ I like diversity.

Actually, I’ve been more keen to use “Native American” (or, as is more common in Canada, “First Nations” or “aboriginal”) merely because there’s another ethnic group (one of the world’s largest) called “Indian”, and there could be some confusion as to which is meant. At least the PC term for the American one helps differentiate them, there isn’t really a term, PC or not\* for the Asian variety.

\*excluding downright insulting ones (like “raghead”) of course. (Wait, is “raghead” meant for wearers of the keffiyeh or turban, I get confused … )

This is contrary to all empirical evidence, and to the conclusions of the overwhelming consensus of medical health professionals, including the AMA and the APA. I know this is supposed to be a thread about opinions, but this particular opinion is spectacularly uninformed.

By choice, naturally. I don’t go down that ol’ ‘oh no-one will love me’ route.
