> In 1993, Spielberg’s movie _Jurassic Park_ was ballyhooed fully in the broadcast and print media. I made no plans to see it, of course, and would have been content to ignore it altogether. But the matter was dropped squarely in my lap by a supervisor at the place I was working–I’ll call him Victor–when quite a few of the employees had seen it and liked it. Victor asked me if I had and I plainly said, “No, I’m not interested.” He had enough character not to rag me or jeer me because I had not chosen to see _Jurassic Park,_ but I dread the hard sell some people impose on their co-workers, relatives, and friends, which would connote some weirdness on my part for not going along with the crowd. I have enough civility not to bite the head off someone who asks me, or walk away without a word. I would be content to have a way to answer those who want me to see a movie, without appearing rude or weird to them. That doesn’t seem too much to ask… \*\*

You did say you had a point to make “her?” I was hard pressed to find it… What about _Jurassic Park_ was so bad that you were never planning to see it? As I recall, the commercials weren’t THAT bad.

If you are looking for a nice way to tell people “fuck off, I don’t want to see that movie,” how about “gee, but I don’t like (insert movie genre here) films.” That way, you can avoid seeing monster movies, dinosaur movies, comedy movies, porno movies, karate movies, or whatever. Duh.

And BTW- walking away without a word **is** rude.

Sorry, I found no point to ponder.

Oops, my bad- read the post wrong, thus the “walking away w/out a word” comment.

Never mind…

That should be “here,” not “her”! I’m sorry!
To answer your question, EJsGirl, I simply eschewed _all_ movies, at this point, regardless of topic, story line, or whatever. I couldn’t tell you anything that happened in _Jurassic Park_ to save my life! (A few years before, a younger woman I’ll call “Liesl,” for whom I was doing driving, shopping and yard work, had some chores of her own and asked me to sit in the living room and watch _City Slickers,_ a movie starring Billy Crystal (whom I’ve only seen occasionally as an Oscar host, and that for only a few minutes each time). She didn’t stay in the living room–she went off to take care of matters in her bathroom and bedroom. I had decided not to watch movies _at all,_ and sneaked outside and sat in the car, waiting until I was able to go home. (This is the same person who _did_ get me to see \*Forrest Gump, Scent of a Woman, Babe \*(about Babe Ruth), _The Andromeda Strain,_ and a semi-documentary about the game-show scandals of the late 1950s. She knew about my idiosyncracies and did not dwell on my sudden departure, though I am sure that she considered it quite rude–as I later admitted.

I agree. I would like to know just _what_ I am getting into, which is why I earlier used the phrase ‘look before I leap.’ Fine and dandy. If it’s sci-fi movies, or violent cop movies I avoid, that’s what I’d like to know at the outset.
It’s irritating, however, when someone–such as the client supervisor (my own immediate supervisor) at the workplace where “Victor” asked me about _Jurassic Park,_ asks me, as he once did, about movies; he seemed astonished when I told him I don’t go to the movies at all–as if such abstinence might be a function of insanity or the state of being a total wet blanket.
I _don’t_ go to the extreme of telling someone (not one who has authority over me!!), “Gad, you went to see that movie? What do you have in your head in place of a brain?!”
That’s NOT my style!
