Unbuckled Kids

cher3: I wonder what we parents are doing now that will horrify our children when they are old enought to have kids.

Probably using hand-held cel phones while driving.

“You mean you didn’t have hands-free cel phones in the 20th Century?”

The Canadians. They walk among us. William Shatner. Michael J. Fox. Monty Hall. Mike Meyers. Alex Trebek. All of them Canadians. All of them here.

Working in a trauma ER, and a PEDS ICU I’ve seen the results of unrestrained collision way too many times, it is messy and it is devastating and it’s a crime,

I’ve often wanted to do this myself, but there’s never a policeman around when you need one.
I don’t even particularly like children, but the seatbelt thing has always bothered me. It seems like some people who have undertaken to bear and raise the next generation just don’t take that responsability seriously, especially when it comes to looking out for the saftey of their little ones.

It seems that I see fewer and fewer kids unrestrained in cars in L.A. Mom may be talking on the cell phone instead of driving the damn car, but at least the kids will be in nice safe car seats when she inevitably ploughs into a bus bench or totals another car with an illegal left turn.

There are agencies in L.A. (I was once a volunteer for one) that provide low-cost car seats, or even free “loaners” to be returned when the kid outgrows them. But I once saw a young couple leaving an L.A. County hospital with their newborn. They struggled to get the rear-facing infant seat into their little car for about twenty minutes before a security guard offered to assist them, but there was a language problem and they couldn’t get it sorted out. The guard went off to get further help, but the couple gave up and drove off with the woman holding the infant. It’s just so odd that the hospital would send people out with a nice new car seat – in fact, you can’t leave the hospital with a baby until you show you have one – but not make sure they knew how to use it!

I do not ride in or drive a vehicle unless I’m buckled up. I have been so conditioned to wear a seat belt that I actually feel uncomfortable without one across my body.

I’ve got two small children, and both are in car seats. My daughter tried to get out of her car seat, while the car was moving, precisely once. My husband yelled very loudly at her, and it scared her (it takes an awful lot to really honk Daddy off). She hasn’t tried it since.

My wife and I are both volunteer EMT’s: Pass on to the mother what unbuckled childen
(and adults) become in an accident - - -

Have her give them a quick “Good-bye kiss” as they pass her to depart through the windsheild! Assuming they’ve missed striking the back of her head rushing bye.
STUPID !

No, no, you must all have missed the memo. Little kids sititng on people’s laps make good airbags. And since they’re replacable, you can just make more.

I mean, they have to be thinking about it that way, right? Otherwise they’re not just stupid, they’re evil.

Oops! My error. These parents ARE stupid. And evil.
