> i think you could call de la soul a one hit wonder. their second single “me myself and i” is the song people think of when they hear de la soul. that, and dayglo yellow, bad haircuts, and daisies. but de la has an amazing catalog of music.
>
> “ring ring ring (hey hey hey)” was also a nominal hit, and so was “saturdays”. well, maybe not so much a one hit wonder. but i think most people identify de la soul with that first video. oh, and some people confuse them for PM dawn, which is just WRONG.

De La Soul is a perfect example for people who think all rap is gangsta crap. “3 Feet High and Rising” is witty, soulful, full of clever wordplay, and has very little to do with growing up on the street. (Not that rapping about the street is a bad thing, it’s just that it need not define rap.) It’s simply a phenomenal album, one that transcends genre boundries and should appeal to music lovers everywhere.

“Buddy” was also a pretty big single off that album. I also thought “The Magic Number” was well known, but Billboard makes no mention of it. I was also a bit surprised to find that every single one of their seven albums made the Billboard 200. (Five placing in the Top 40.)

> Oh, you poor, deluded children. Distracted by your Blur you’ve missed the greatest band that is a one-hit wonder anyone will ever see.
>
> I give you two words, honey-child:
>
> ‘Cowboy Mouth’
>
> The had a sort of hit in the mid/late 90s with ‘Jenny Says’ off their first major label release ‘Are You With Me’. Attempts to follow it up never quite made it. But the albums before and after are thunderous rock and roll music with some blues and country influence.
>
> Never made it during the alt-rock years because they were pretty much a straight ahead rock and roll band (and an older one at that) they are…
>
> THE GREATEST LIVE BAND THERE WILL EVER BE
>
> I have seen, literally, over 1000 bands perform live. Cowboy is clearly the best. The enthusiasm, the charisma, the raw sex appeal of the music is something no one else has ever done.
>
> Cake magazine once wrote “On a bad night they’ll tear the roof off the house…on a good night they’ll save your soul.”
>
> You come out of Cowboy Mouth shows **knowing** that you’re better than when you went in because of the music you just experienced. It gives you strength to take on the day.

Shoulda seen **Dash Rip Rock** when Fred was in them. They could put on a pretty damn good show, too.

> Spin Doctors! Sure, everyone loved “Two Princes” and subsequently forgot about them (or confused them with other one-hit wonders), but I went out and bought their CD because I liked “Two Princes” a lot. I mistakenly got “Turn It Upside Down” (which does not have “Two Princes”), which was pretty fortuitous cause I loved it! “Cleopatra’s Cat” is probably one of my favorite songs. Their other CD (“Pocket Full of Kryptonite”) is good as well.

Those guys played at my college freshman year (1991). They were huge for like a year (around when Pocket Full of Kryptonite came out I imagine) and then you never heard from them again. Same thing happened to a similar band called Rusted Root around 1995ish. That Greatful Dead/Phish/Dave Mathews jam-band style was very popular on my campus. At least until gangsta rap came around.

Keeping it to US bands:

The Nails (88 Lines About 44 Women) was my first instinct. Also The Distillers? (City Of Angels)
