> > Will it be baby blues or a brown-eye girl? Your baby’s iris color begins to appear around the thirty-first week. Most babies are born with dark blueish-brown or bluish-gray eyes, but this shade almost always changes after birth. True eye color won’t be apparent for six to nine months – final formation of eye pigmentation happens **in response to exposure to the strong light of the outside world**.

i’m not sure if your link refers to babies of all ethnic groups. anyway, what does the words in bold imply? that we can control pigmentation by keeping babies in the dark? 😕

As **shijinn** said, are you sure that applies to all babies? Most cites I’ve seen suggest otherwise. [For example](http://www.fisher-price.com/us/parentingsolutions/qanda_view.asp?QandAid=31360):

> African-American, Latino, and Asian babies typically have more melanin and brown eyes at birth, and their eyes remain brown for life. Caucasian or part-Caucasian babies may have little melanin production at birth and dark blue or steel gray eyes.

Anyway, I guess you can argue whether “dark blueish-brown” would really be called being born with “blue eyes”.
