Maps? We don’t need no stink’ maps! That’s the whole idea behind advertising and branding. Sigh….!
Is this a question of corporate nefareiousness or whether “meat is murder”? I agree Corporate America (or more recently Corporate World) is a bunch of money grubbing, lying, public screwing assholes. But they ain’t stupid, they sell what the people want. If you don’t want to buy it, fine. But you sure as hell are not justified in traumatizing 3 year olds with fringe politics!
I think it would behoove us to follow this story over the summer and see how many 3-year-olds are actually shocked by masquerading unhappy meals, and just how much press and publicity PETA and their issues get.
Main Entry: be·hoove
Pronunciation: bi-'hüv
Function: verb
Inflected Form(s): be·hooved; be·hoov·ing
Etymology: Middle English behoven, from Old English behOfian, from behOf
Date: before 12th century
transitive senses : to be necessary, proper, or advantageous for <it behooves us to go>
intransitive senses : to be necessary, fit, or proper
And why should I give a damn what a bunch of snively, NIMBY infected, middle class idiots cook up?
BTW - answer the question. Are you a mindless PETA defender, or do you have an oppinion you actually have thought of yourself?
You know, I may just stake out my local McDonald’s Playland this summer on the off-chance I get to verbally attack one of these assholes. I’m considering taking some really offensive pornography with me so I can shove it into their faces, force them to unnecessarily look at something vile and disgusting against their will.
> Do these morons not realize that without a major influx
> of protein, provided by a meat rich diet, hominid brains
> never would have developed enough for us to be human.
Do you have a citation for this? Sounds interesting, but I’d like to know your source for this.
I think that multiple visits to fast-food places are just as bad as people from PETA talking to classes. Perhaps one visit to one kind of restaurant might be educational to students, just as one visit to any other kind of workplace might be useful, but if the restaurant is using the visit to push their agenda, that’s just as bad as allowing PETA to push their agenda to students. Restaurants usually don’t encourage visits because they are public-spirited citizens who are happy to help children; rather, they do it because they want to develop new customers.
Note to Biotop: It’s possible that the teacher took those kids to two fast food restaurants for field trips only because two sets of parents happened to work there. Teachers often hang field trips on the coathook of a parent’s job, (a) because it’s more educational (you can tie it in to career stuff back in the classroom), and (b) it’s usually easier to arrange a field trip to a place that doesn’t normally welcome 40 or 50 little kids invading them, if a mom or dad already works there.
I confidently predict that this latest PETA stunt will only take place, if at all, in the larger cities with the most active (interested) media. I can’t imagine this taking place in front of any one of the 3 McDonalds here in my medium-sized blue-collar downstate Illinois city. They would be gently but firmly escorted off the premises by the local cops, who would turn an indifferent ear to any protestations of “free speech” and “rights of public assembly”. “That’s not how we do things around here.” End of story. And I think PETA knows this–they aren’t stupid, and they don’t have the resources to waste on “downstate”. Chicago, brace yourself!
Actually, “right of public assembly” is only a right on public property. From my understanding, PETA intends to have a public assembly on private McDonald’s property. They’re probably looking to get arrested to bring media attention to their “righteous cause.”
Please. I used to think they were doing good. Now I think they’re doing stupid!
I’m not an AR activist or even a vegetarian, but I think it’s silly to get upset over the fact that some people get upset over animal suffering, or to be rudely confrontational to people who are being rudely confrontational. We all just have to get used to the fact that many people think humans should just leave other animals alone as much as possible, and that some of these people will be sufficiently upset about this to resort to extreme propaganda. Hell, I’ve been in southern India during a local political demonstration and riot over whether the government should even permit the establishment of a new abattoir.
Face it: the notion that humans are automatically justified in doing whatever we want to non-humans is starting to die out, all over the world. I think it’s much more necessary to be able to discuss that calmly with other adults and explain it calmly to children than to inflict verbal or physical abuse (in front of children, yet!) on people using despicable scare tactics.
In my optimistic moments I really believe that eventually we’ll all be vegetarians. I have to admit I’m usually glad we’re not quite there yet, though.
[Oh wait, what am I thinking?! This is the Pit! 'Scuse me: @##%@#%@(*)(*%@@##!!! That’s more like it.]
I think they’re right about one thing, McDonald’s is a heartless and basically evil corporation. But that’s being redundant, all corporations are heartless and evil. The bigger the corporation, the more evil they’re likely to be. I just think PETA is going about this the wrong way. Slowly but surely they’re making themselves just as bad as the people they oppose.
So I suppose you bunch of carcass-munching goat-felchers are equally upset over:
a) public schools – PUBLIC SCHOOLS, fer chrissakes – who allow McDonald’s to “sponsor” things in their schools, in exchange for which McDonald’s gets to supply food to the cafeterias as well as FLY A McD’s FLAG ON THE FUCKING SCHOOL FLAGPOLE; and
b) the literature supplied by McDonald’s, as well as several other restaurants and domestic cattle producers, that is given to our public school children to teach them how WONDERFUL meat is and usually depicts happy cows, chickens and pigs merrilly and voluntarily leaping into slaughterhouses for our benefit?
Why should McDonald’s have this level of access to children’s minds, but PETA shouldn’t? Defend that, you fucking jackasses.
Phil, it’s not really complicated. The reason schools let McDonald’s promote their agenda is because they give back to the community by “sponsoring” events, donating food, etc. It’s a symbiotic relationship.
And, frankly, I can’t see how McDonald’s is any more odious a corporation than say, Burger King.
And FTR in my 17+ years of education, I don’t recall every seeing one piece of propoganda depicting animals happily walking to the slaughterhouse.
I believe I have already addressed this, but maybe I should repeat it using smaller words. I haven’t seen anyone describing McDonalds as a friendly, cuddly wonderful organization. What we ** have ** been saying is PETA is fucking, over-the-top, ** insane **.
I have no problem with them voicing their opinion and trying to change public attitudes. But when this “crusade” extends to terrorizing children and general lunatic behavior, I really must take umbrage. Act like a civilized person, then I may listen to your “civilized” message. Until then, fuck off.
As for a Mickey D in the local school, I’m not crazy about it either. I sure as hell would bend the ear of the school board about it too. I’m of the firm belief that any company with more than two levels of responsibility between the mailroom and owner has already started to degenerate into a leech on the body politic. But that’s like cursing a hurricane, it’s not right, not fair, just is.
And since this IS the pit: For the record, I prefer sheep raping verses goat felching, you syphilitic, pig fucking, hamster squicking sack of camel shit.
So you have no problem with public schools being used as a device for a multi-billion dollar corporation to build a brand image in impressionable young children?
Is that really the purpose of the public schools–to fly some corporation’s flag on their flagpole? How long will it be before your children pldege allegiance to the Coca-Cola company (another one that engages in the odious “school branding” practice) every morning?
Furthermore, McDonald’s has done this the other way around–when a vegetarian group (not PETA, IIRC) in the UK passed out pamphlets in front of their restaurants that specifically mentioned McD’s as contributing to animal cruelty, McDonald’s sued them. And they lost, because a judge found that McDonald’s slaughterhouses practices WERE cruel. Turnabout is fair play, I say.
Allowing for the obvious hyperbole I included, all of the groups I mentioned definitely engage in educational efforts beginning in early grade school which depict happy, smiling animals, with no reference to the reality behind the meat produciton industry.
pl, I must agree with you.
McDonalds food sucks. The only reason I ever did go there was they ar eeverywhere, including 2 in small lakewood(one right by my sons former school).
McDonalds spends tons of advertising; thats why most folks even go there. Don’t tell me its because the food is good.
I heard the original Ronald McDonald became a vegetarian.
I remember when the school handed out promotional health pamphlets from the meat and dairy councils. How unbiased!
I agree with BigJoe that PETA’s insane. I also believe that the primary flaw in PETA’s extremist tactics is that they often alienate people who might have been swayed to PETA’s side by more rational words and especially deeds.
What the Hell??? Is Corporate America insidious? Yes, they are but the effect of Corporate America in our schools has been mainly positive. It brings money into our schools and in return they put up with some “advertising”. Like the kid wouldn’t see McDonalds advertising anyway. Billboards, print, radio, tv… Maybe PETA should take a hint and spend their money this way. Oh wait they have already lost their legitimacy in the eyes of the American people and probably wouldn’t be allowed in school. That and that whole making up facts to suit our arguments thing.
Handing out a pamphlet and handing out bloody clowns are two different things.
Now this is an interesting point… Last I checked a very large communication company had been promoting an anti-hunting message in basically this same manner for years. With the happy, smiling, talking animals. And actually most children are exposed to this before they even go to school. Can you guess who??
Screw PETA, they are only trying to draw free media coverage. They have established themselves as a fringe group of pathetic losers. If they continue with these tactics they will lose any ounce of credibility they have left.
However, they still seem to see their right to infringe on other people. Be it confrontation at McDonalds or red paint being tossed on women in fur coats. Perhaps it is time for the meat eaters, hunters, and people with leather or fur coats to band together. We could pull out a slogan from the Civil Rights movement and defend our right to a hamburger, fur coat, or to go hunting BY ANY MEANS NECESSARY!!
Oh…but wait that is what they want. If we react to them they get to cast us in the roll of Bull Conner. Fuck you… I have not infringed on you. If you believe eating meat, drinking milk and wearing fur/leather coats is evil so be it. You’re entitled to your own opinion but don’t fucking shove it down my throat and then if I react to your inflammatory bullshit make me out to be the bad guy.
In closing, PETA is a fucking joke, I personally don’t see how any rational human being could condone their tactics. I highly recommend any PETA members in central Wisconsin not to fuck with me while I am eating, hunting or wearing with my leather coat. I will have a civilized discussion with you if you want or for that matter if you can. Too many of your arguments are based on emotion and not fact so I don’t think you can hold the conversation without going off like a firecracker.
