If we as parents (yes, I am- 3 children) allow PETA to hand our children bloody dolls, what should we allow next? Should we allow abortion protestors to hand our children bloody fetuses? Should we let nuclear protestors hand our children oozing, dripping, mutated animal parts? Should I allow anyone to teach my children whatever the fuck they feel like teaching them today? Maybe I should let the Neo-Nazis teach my children to hate anyone who is not white?
PETA, by handing these “Unhappy Meals” to children instead of the parents, are asking us to give up our right to censor what our children learn. They are asking us to neglect our responsibility to these small, vulnerable people who have been placed in our care, and turn their minds over to someone else. I don’t think so.
My son is 2, and would not understand the message behind the doll- he’d simply rip the legs off and try to shove the head of the thing down the toilet. My daughters, however, are 5 and 9, and would be horrified and traumatized by finding such a gruesome thing in their possession. I don’t let them watch scary movies, I wouldn’t let them take one of these dolls. And anyone who handed one to my child without my permission would find themselves on the wrong end of a lawsuit. Infringe on my rights as a parent, put my child at risk of mental anguish, I will tear you apart–verbally, legally, and in the media. I WILL NOT let anyone hurt my children, and some of the members of PETA are threatening to do just this. What would this teach my children? Mom takes care of her own, that’s what it would teach them. That and they would also learn that the people from PETA are mean and like to scare little kids, and would want to stay far away from them in the future.
Oops, I missed this earlier, which is why I did not give you credit or acknowledge your apology. Early on this board, when I was new and testing the waters, I posted as a male personna (for about the first 30 posts or so, I can’t remember). When I discovered that this board was actually very open minded and friendly towards people with sexual identity and orientation issues, I started posting as I am.
Look, let’s not fight about the small stuff. As you explain your position more and more, it seems that your views are actually pretty reasonable and shared by others. But take my comment on PETA’s silence w.r.t. condemnation of terrorist or vandalous acts as a real, non-argumentative or troll-like question.
I’m a proud member of the NRA, which like PETA has a serious PR problem. When a tragedy occurs or a gun-related crime is reported widely in the news, the NRA is quick to make a press release saying how they condemn those actions and want to work towards stopping them. Whether the general public buys it or not, it does help their image in some people’s minds, and I’m sure it tips the scales of general opinion somewhat. It also shows without question where they stand on the issue. What I’m saying is, PETA has not done this, and it’s for one of three reasons:
They are implicitly supportive of it.
They are not supportive of it, and also do not realize the potential PR benefit for them.
They have a philosophical take on the issue that goes “we don’t have to defend ourselves against our critics, or define our position fully to the general public. We know we’re good people and we know we’re doing the right thing, and that should be enough.”
I honestly DO NOT KNOW which one it could be, but I will admit that it appears, IMHO, that it is #1. That is what my issue is now. Will you admit that it at least appears that way, and they ought to do a better job of PR?
PS: I’m very sorry to hear about your move. Moving to another city is often, IMHO, one of the worst traumas to go through. I’ve turned down GOOD job offers, that would pay double what I make now, because I simply do not want to move. The only thing that would make me is if my neighborhood turned bad. So good luck, and hopefully you can stay put for a while.
I’m 16. I eat at least three hamburgers a week and tons more red meat. doctor said it was fine as long as I kept up with some exercise. Hey, I like meat, so shoot me. oh dear, i’ve given an open invitation to some PETA wacko…
And I wrote an email to them. I don’t have it on me, but i do remember some things.
“I wouldn’t have known about you people and could have given a shit less until I hear what you did to Green Bay. I wouldn’t have known about the meaning. I didn’t want to know about the meaning. I would have thought it meant cheese packers. I honestly don’t see your reasoning on anything. In the mean time, lay off the football teams.”
They haven’t wrote back. Oh, wait, I know why now. The computer is run off of power from coal that animals once walked on.

PETA has no right to force “education” on anyone.[/li][li]It is st the sole discretion of the parents to decide when and how it is approproate to teach thier children about this issue.[/li][li]I sure wish my high school had McDonalds, we had to sneak out to get a good burger. (not that McDonalds burgers are good but they are better than school shit)[/li][li]God created animals for man’s use.[/li][li]Animals should be put in as little pain as possible duing medical testing.[/li][li]Legal hunting is a good way to control the deer population and prevent animal suffering (stravation)[/li][li]Anyone who really cares about the animal rights cause should be strongly ANTI-PETA[/li][/ul]
