Locally, there is a S & M Paving Company. How they pave driveways in all that latex is beyond me. Must be part of the thrill. Also, there is a S & M Equipment Company. Bulldozers and backhoes indeed. ---

In LaCrosse, WI, there is a gas station/convenience store called “Pump n’ Munch”. Not a bad night’s work, that. Also, a local small supermarket called Dick’s has a customer club card type program where you have weekly specials and whatnot. The club’s name? The Insiders. That’s right, the Dick’s Insider club. They even advertise on billboards and newspapers. ---

I’m working with 1998-vintage phone books here at the office, but a quick search found the following Maryland businesses: S&M Auto Supply (Bladensburg) S&M Marketing (Silver Spring) S&M Painting & Paperhanging (Rockville) B&D Auto Parts (Damascus) B&D Consulting and Advertising (Silver Spring) B&D Decorating (Churchton) B&D Fuel Injection Service (Temple Hills) B&D Garage Door Service & Repair (Rockville) B&D Kitchens (White Plains) B&D Landscaping & Lawn Service (Silver Spring) B&D Marketing Group (Annapolis) B&D Weddings (Upper Marlboro) I’ve never attended a B&D Wedding, but I’ll bet it gives new meaning to ‘tying the knot’. I’m not sure why either B&D or S&M need to be marketed - you just let those who like that sorta thing know it’s available, and the rest should take care of itself. (Maybe that’s what B&D Advertising does.) Does B&D Decorating use a lot of decorating motifs involving ropes and chains? And I’m not sure _what_ the deal is with either B&D or S&M Auto Parts, but I think I understand B&D Fuel Injection Service. 😃 ---

Probably the worst I have been involved with: I was working on a paper where the lady doing the headlines that day had started happy hour a little early and she wrote: **Council schedules pubic meeting** (we made Leno with that one) A few years earlier I was sports editor on a paper in Guymon, Oklahoma and a nearby community is named Hooker. My headline for a baseball game between the home team and the nearby community read: **Hooker takes on nine from Guymon**. ---

Around here there was a placed called “A.P. Rectal Clinic” and in the marquee below it said “Free Eye Exams” That made America’s Funniest Home Videos. During last year’s World Series between the Yankees and Diamondbacks, someone held up a sign that said “It takes more than 9 Yanks to beat the Big Unit” For those of you who don’t know, Randy Johnson, a pitcher for the Diamondbacks, is 6’10" and his nickname is the Big Unit(how fitting for a guy named Johnson). ---
