At the base of the Filbert St steps (which are/were subject to heavy fog/light drizzle) a 4’x4’ diamond warning sign: Caution Pedestrians Slippery When Wet Yes, the word Caution is all by itself on the top line. I never got around to adding the colon after it (please use flat black sign painter’s enamel. a 1/2" square-cut artist’s brush is indicated). ---

I drove by a sign everyday on the interstate for some land owner who was leasing land with small crude oil pumps on it with a big billboard out front encouraging you to call 1-XXX-DRY-HOLE. My then 20 yr.old mind couldn’t help but think of some very painful intercourse. I couldn’t help but chuckle every time I drove by. I was eventually compelled to stop and take a picture, although I’ve lost it now. My brother once told me of a liquor store he used to drive by called “Dicks Liquor” ---

In Concordia MO (about an hour east of KC) there used to be a large “MOTEL” sign off the highway with an arrow pointing down to motel just below. Except, at just the right angle heading east, it looked like the sign was pointing to the cemetery just behind the motel. (I used to have a picture of it but can’t find it, and I think the sign is gone now.) ---

Giant Eagle is also in Columbus, where my family still lives. When I was growing up there, one of the main grocery chains there was locally-headquartered Big Bear. This has led to humorous predictions on the next chain to come to town. Huge Moose? Enormous Eel? For years there was a day care near my house called Kids Stop Learning Center. ---

For almost a year, the Time to Learn preschool that I pass on my way to work every day sported a sign missing the “L”, making it the Time to Earn preschool. Child labor is alive and well. ---
