Unique Kitchen Equipment

gasp And it packs flat for storage! Do they ship to the US? Now, someone needs to come up with a round version! Oh, there would be so much more room in my cabinets…

I gave my mom the carousel one for some holiday. She is childlike and loves carousels.

Loks like there’s also a stadium, Festival and Fairy-tale cottage.

I also have a popover pan and mini-cheesecake pan from King Arthur Flour. The former goes with the popover mix from them.

Or I would, if they shipped to Canada… And people weren’t gouging prices on eBay… :mad: And thus begins my expedition to local cooking specialty shops, printout from website clutched in hand.

Apparently not. Who are these people that have so much cabinet space that they can squander storage volume on one-trick ponies?

I’m in AB’s camp - the only unitasker in my kitchen is the fire extinguisher. Heck, even the dog does multiple things - she snarfs down anything tasty that might get dropped on the floor, and also keeps the fridge door from opening if anything fell against it inside by laying on the floor directly in front of it.

People like the hard crunchy edges of brownies? Huh. Learn something new every day. :stuck_out_tongue:

Actually, you can also use the extinguisher to crack walnuts.

I can’t get along without a garlic press and a citrus juicer. Well, maybe I could, but it would take all the joy out of cooking. Pulverized garlic and lemon juice are the two most common ingredients in my cooking, aside from salt.

I am also a sucker for all kinds of baking pans. I have a fancy shortbread pan that molds thistles and celtic knots on the shortbread. I also bought a set of three Bundt pans that are three-cup pans. Not cupcake size, not whole cake size, but somewhere in-between. They’re perfect for baking old fashioned English teatime cake recipies, which never make enough batter for a real pan.

I also have a kitchen torch. I love to brulee things. And I’m considering buying an apple peeler-corer-slicer. Those things are just wicked cool.

I don’t know - Alton’s been sneaking some unitaskers into recent shows.

Like the olive pitter and the vanilla bean splitting tool.

Uh, I think you can use the olive pitter as a cherry pitter as well.

::d&r:: :smiley:

And…and…it’s a handy home torture device!

::d&r after medstar:: :smiley:

I’m confused by the people who think the pizzelle iron is a unique kitchen tool. In my kitchen, it’s an absolute necessity. I have two, my mom has one, my sister has one, my sister-in-law has one, my aunts… Anyway.

And yeah, it’s a unitasker, but how else you gonna make pizzelles? There’s no way.

Not according to this handy video. They claim a cherry pitter can handle an olive, but not vice-versa.

Well, description of the olive pitter that was linked to says, “Works on cherries too!” which I think was medstar’s point.

Well, I don’t know about the rest of you, but I NEED a scone pan. Mmmm, fresh blueberry scones…

Exactly. It’s not like you can carve a press out of a pair of bricks or something. Even Alton use a waffle iron, so for very specific tasks, you just have to use very specific equipment.

You might like this garlic crusher we got for my mother-in-law and grandmother-in-law (I want one for myself now, too – just need to find time to get back to my favorite kitchen store). I first saw this little gadget in Real Simple magazine (Love! That! Mag!), and just had to have it for my in-laws, who just love “artsy”, as well as kitchen stuff. Luckily I found it locally, so I didn’t have to pay shipping charges, but it’s also available a couple dollars cheaper from Amazon, if you’re interested.

I don’t know what it’s called, but it’s a long iron or other kinda metal thingy that you dip into batter, then put in hot oil - that’s what cooks the fried/cookie like thingy that then comes off the iron and you sprinkle powdered sugar on it and eat it.

My grandmother used to use it all the time to make these things for my brother and I but I don’t remember what she called it (she’s been dead for 25 years so I can’t ask her) but the head of this thing is shaped like a flower.

I haven’t used it in ages, but I’ve got it. Somewhere.

And if anyone knows what the heck it’s called or can find a picture, PLEASE let me know.

ETA: I FOUND IT!! It’s for making Rosettes. They look like these. The iron is pictured here.
