> The same could be said about gay pride participants 20 years ago. “If he’s brave enough to go out there in rainbow face paint and talk about overthrowing the natural order of things, he is brave enough to let everyone know.” What _shouldn’t_ people be brave enough to face constantly?

And people were brave, and they did go out and march. Not just gay people, but people who supported the rights of gay people.

And people did get “doxxed” (though I doubt that was a term back then), people did lose their jobs, have their families threatened, and get assaulted both at and away from the parade.

They did it because it was what they believed in, and they were willing to take the risk that comes with openly and publically letting people know what they believe.

Same with the nazis, if they want to openly and publically express what they believe, then they need to take the same risk as those who fought for same sex rights.

I disagree with violent “doxxing”, in that I don’t think that their addresses and other personal info should be disseminated, but if you recognize someone at the rally, there is nothing wrong, IMHO, from mentioning it to their friends, co-workers, bosses, or even religious leaders. I know that if I ever saw one of my employees marching with nazis, they’d no longer have a place here.

If people need to be brave and face consequences for advocating for rights, then it is only fair that people need to be brave and face consequences for advocating for genocide.

They already see anyone who is not them as an enemy. By not resisting, they see you as an easy enemy.

Appeasing nazis has never worked.

I’m not entirely sure. I’m not a Nazi, I don’t have any Nazi friends; you get the idea.

Just being white does not make you the master race. I don’t know what you look like, but it is likely that you are not their definition. If you are white, then that just means that they don’t think that you are going to get in their way as they commit genocide on the minorities that you are not inclined to stand up for.

If you are not the master race, then once they’ve taken care of the people you don’t care about, then they will come after you.

If you are the master race, congratulations, the nazis will let you join them.

Yup, because they also want to be rid of the mentally ill, the handicapped, the LGBTQ people, the impure, those who question authority, etc, etc.

They’ll get to you at some point.

I don’t understand your point. It’s okay if they see a targeted group as their enemy, but if there’s a chance they might see you as an enemy then it’s problematic?

With my all-German all the time heritage, I would be doing pretty well. Then I had to go all coalburner race traitor on them. It’s pretty devastating that I can’t hack it in their elite club.

Hey, you’re the one who advocates teaching at the source that extremism is bad. But remember, it’s OK to allow the symbols of extremist ideology to be shown so that extremists get their right of free speech.

> Something very much like this hypo is being discussed ad nauseum in my corner of the world this evening. I think you identified the crux.

I find it interesting to think about how I would view certain actions if I read them in a book versus living them.

It reminds me of reading about the bystander effect and how we revile those who do nothing but I recognize that when you’re faced with the actual situations, you don’t always even know what the hell is happening. I’ve witnessed things hundreds of times where I didn’t know if something bad was happening because I had no context. It feels like some people look at things like Charlottesville and say “I have a context for this” and others say “You can’t bring in that context.”

In a book, we are either spoonfed the context or divorced from it. Reality doesn’t allow for that.

Sorry. There are some things I have to find funny, but I should be more aware that others aren’t necessarily as hardened to it as I am.

Oh, no problem. I was exaggerating the ☹ a little. I grew up in rural Missouri. I’ve heard a lot of racist crap, just not that particular one. At least in my corner of the world, things have gotten a bit better since I was a kid. For example, my parents were long opposed to interracial marriage. Then I married a non-white woman. If my parents still objected to it, at least they kept their opinions to themselves. Progress of a sort. My in-laws, interestingly, did not extend the same courtesy. Oh well. Win some, lose some.

Do you have kids? I understand grandbabies can be a game changer for many racists.

That sucks. I experienced bad in-laws in my first marriage (interestingly, one of the issues I had with those in-laws was their virulent racism). My MIL now is absolutely lovely.

Googling that (I could guess its meaning, but I wanted to be sure), I find the definition to be a bit disturbing, but that is not what puts ugliness into my day.

It’s that googling it also brings up all the different forums and message places where that phrase is used. Without even clicking on any of them, just with the preview from the search page, I saw many comments that make me weep for humanity.

Thank you(?) for bringing this new expression of hate to my attention.

We have two, ages 6 and 3. I’m not sure how much of an impact they had. My folks actually warmed up to my wife when we were still dating. By the time the kids came, my parents, at least outwardly, had been cool with our relationship for a while. My in-laws got to a point of grudging acceptance I think. They love the kids, of course, but if I dropped out of the picture, they’d be just as happy.

My wife is ethnically Indian (she grew up in the US). There was a fascinating article on NPR a while back about how some black Americans posed as Indians in the Jim Crow era. They found that many Americans of the time saw Indians as a sort of exotic race that existed outside the racial hierarchy in the US. One black writer of that era said that there were restaurants in the South he would never think of trying to go into, but he could put on some faux Indian attire and a turban and be welcomed as an emissary from a magical land. My dad was like that, I think. He grew up in the 40s and 50s in what was then a rural area outside St. Louis. He was unfailingly polite and respectful to everyone, but he privately held many of the racial attitudes of white working class men of that era. If I had fallen in love with a black woman, I suspect his reaction would have been different. But maybe, for him, Indians were an alien group that didn’t upset the racial order, and so my wife was OK. In any case, both he and my mom accepted her pretty quickly.

It was actually a new one on me several years ago in a thread on this board where someone asked if white women were tainted if they had sex with a black man (paraphrased). Quite a few revelations came from that thread, including how fucking racist a number of people on this board are who had stayed below the radar until then. And I learned about coalburners and mudsharks! Always good to have more slang terms to label yourself.

My brother-in-law is one racist fuck. He was going off on a rant someday about the problem with America is that whites don’t have enough children. This is to me, someone married to a Taiwanese, and with biracial kids. That was the point that I stopped visiting them.

Absolutely.
Like I posted somewhere, “The Eternal Struggle” demands that there must always be an Other, an enemy, a scapegoat. If they did manage to totally exterminate one (which is what they want and what they DID try in the 20th century) they will have to create another target and another and another. So, it would never EVER end. It can’t.

I don’t really know how to classify my family. They identify as conservatives.

But they hold very liberal positions on policing ( possibly because some of them have been on the wrong side of the law a time or two ). And my 90 year old mother has been known to use the phrase “Black Lives Matter” in conversation and she gets worked up about those news stories. And they’ve always been pro-life and they have literally laughed about evolution deniers. I was raised with an emphasis on critical thinking-my parents would walk me through the process if I expressed an irrational opinion.

But they are very conservative on immigration. My mom picked up my copy of Matt Taibbis The Divide

> **[The Divide: American Injustice in the Age of the Wealth Gap - Kindle edition by...](https://www.amazon.com/Divide-American-Injustice-Age-Wealth-ebook/dp/B00EBRUB02)**
>
> The Divide: American Injustice in the Age of the Wealth Gap - Kindle edition by Taibbi, Matt, Crabapple, Molly. Download it once and read it on your Kindle device, PC, phones or tablets. Use features like bookmarks, note taking and highlighting while...

and was happily reading the condemnations of urban policing - then she got to the section on immigration. She called me to tell me “I think that guy’s a liberal”.

And they’re still dumbfuck stupid about Trump. It not that they like what he’s doing but as of a month ago, at least -they were still into “everyone is so mean to him” -“all presidents do stupid stuff”, “respect the office” and “give him a chance”. I haven’t checked in on the subject lately because Mom’s 90 and hasn’t been well but I keep thinking something’s got to give. Really. Soon I hope.

I will say one thing. I watched the VICE video and the ideologies expressed by the alt-right are explicitly, jaw-droppingly violent. There’s a scene where Cantwell is unloading weapons in his hotel room, talking about how eager he is to get the strength in numbers required for genocide, and in the wake of the terrorist attack that killed a person _just hours before_ he remarks that, ‘‘Well, nobody on our side died, so I’d call that a bonus for us.’’ It’s just beyond the pale horrifying.

I was not, as a leftist, pleased with some of the behavior of people on the left. But that some people would watch that video and say, ‘‘Look at all those Antifa thugs being violent!’’ really blows my fucking mind.
