"Unschooling" the rebellious twin of the home-schooling movement

[

](http://www.wisdomquotes.com/001681.html)I agree with Mr. Einstein. I see nothing wrong with trying to modify the methods of instruction to help encourage and maintain a child’s natural curiosity.

Enjoy,
Steven

Well i’m not exactly sure what you mean by “tootling my horn” but since someone asked for clarification i gave it.

i am perfectly well aware that the letter ‘i’ is normally capitalised but as i am a member of the BDSM community i choose not to do so. I don’t think it’s relevant to my post as it is perfectly legible whether i capitalise or not. YMMV

Well, the last part of that sentence to me seems completely non-sequitur.

She does it so you’ll be mean to her, I guess.

In defense of zelie I did ask her(?) and the other un-schooled poster to give me more info on their experiences. So she(?) isn’t just “tooting your own horn.” Just answering some questions w/o having quoted them.

Maybe it has something to do with being submissive and inferior? Who knows?

zelie, I understand you may not want to because of your identity, but around here, we’re pretty strict about correct grammar and punctuation and such.

Sorry I missed this!

1. What country did you live in?
U.S.A.

2. What decade was this?
1990s.

3. Did your parents have to agree to or sign anything? What was their involvement?
Yes. They enrolled me in a district-run “independent studies” program. I had to go in once a week, turn in assignments, and received new ones. Due to administrative issues, I was not disciplined for breaking those rules, and thus I basically was unschooled.

4. Did you follow some sort of program like the ones mentioned in this thread, or just stop going to school?
Eventually I stopped doing (most) of the required work.

5. I am guessing to get into junior college you need a GED (or your country’s equivilant). Did you get that?
I took the (laughable) California High School Proficiency Exam - a GED equivalent, but only in California.

6. When did you move out of your parents’ house?
Just last year.

Thank you, but (in my case) it’s highly undeserved. Basically, I slipped under the radar, goofed off, realized it was taking me nowhere, then decided to do something with my life… it just happened to be the same path everyone else was taking, but at least I knew why I was doing it, and I really wanted to do it.

She means she’s a submissive. Capitalised personal pronouns are for dominants. Do not tell her to go and punish herself…

(Personally I would prefer a slave, who would shape up and use good grammar when she was damn well told.)

**Malacandra ** is indeed correct though it’s not a hard and fast rule. It’s just really habit by now and i can’t be bothered breaking myself of it. If anyone is so fussy that they can’t bear to read a post with one letter typed incorrectly then they are very welcome to skim over it

**Rushgeekgirl ** and **Inigo ** i understand what you are saying. For some reason people seem to be very much on the defensive despite the fairly clear descriptions of ‘unschooling’ given by you both and others.

I have a friend who took her kids out of school to do homeschooling but from the conversations i occasionally have with her it seems they have gone the route of unschooling and the kids are thriving. Actually i think they mix and match a little by spending part of each week on specific subjects (grammar, maths, sports and socialising) and then let the kids’ own interests form the rest of the time. A nice blend of two systems i think.

In which zelie illustrates almost perfectly the difference between a submissive and a slave.

I just have to say, I think talking about the BDSM community in a thread about a homeschooling technique is one of the most unexpected and hilarious hijacks ever.

And as a Dom, I will continue to capitalize I.

Thank you, we now return to the ongoing debate of child-coddling hippies vs. The Man.

Well, BDSM is just a noncyclic permutation of SDMB.

lmao Q.E.D

but i guess we should stop hijacking - feel free to discuss me elsewhere though :stuck_out_tongue:
