Hijack: Are there any movies that point up the moral of Buddhism, history and common sense, to wit, that revenge simply begets more revenge?

The Matrix sequels
Groundhog Day

Although I don’t think those are what you mean as they are more about pseudo-Buddhist morals than about revenge or lack thereof.

Two by the Japanese irector Masaki Kobayashi, too often overshadowed by Kurosawa:

In [Harakiri](http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0056058/), an old ronin shows up at the house of a samurai clan, threatening to commit suicide if they don’t give him a hand-out. They call his bluff, and tell him about the previous ronin whose bluff they’d called, and had been made to commit suicide painfully with a bamboo knife. The ronin announces that that had been is son-in-law, and proceeds to tear the place apart.

In [Samurai Rebellion](http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0061847/), the Shogun jerks his loyal samurai until the breaking point. It’s a pretty good illustratin of how loyalty has to be a two-way street.

As far as “revenge against society as a whole,” no example makes a better story than [Carl Panzram’s.](http://www.trutv.com/library/crime/serial_killers/history/panzram1/1.html) James Woods was [miscast in a misfire](http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0113542/) that really doesn’t capture the book.

No movies about any of them that I could find, but the Royal Navy has had [13 ships](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMS_Revenge) named “Revenge” between 1577 and 1995. Those guys sure can nurse a grudge.

One that i like is a relatively unknown film by British director Shane Meadows. It’s called [Dead Man’s Shoes](http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0419677/), and stars Paddy Considine as the avenger.

This reminded me of one of the great revenge stories of Japan, [the Forty-Seven Ronin](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Forty-seven_Ronin). It’s been made into a movie several times, but I’ve never seen any. Keanu Reeves is apparently starring in a new version coming out next year (_"I know kenjutsu!_" “Show me.”).

Point Blank is an incredible movie, payback is very much in its shadow.
Also another vote for First Blood.

> Damon has the Bourne sequels which are also at least partially about revenge.

> JCVD has Double Impact, Death Warrant, and others.
> Almost every story in Sin City is about revenge but especially Marv’s.
> Stallone has a few that could loosely fit this label, films that don’t stand out about revenge but end up that way like Rocky III, Rocky IV, Rocky V, Tango and Cash, etc.
> Arnold has Commando, Total Recall, Eraser, The 6th Day, Collateral Damage, and probably others.
> And Charles Bronson and Lee Marvin made enough of these movies to keep John Cena working in crappy action moves forever.
> Even if they aren’t noteworthy there are tons of direct-to-DVD sequels and "original"s.

Steven Seagal has a bunch, notably _Hard to Kill_.

Swayze also had _Next of Kin_.
