Are there any words you use that you rarely hear other people use? Here’s a couple of mine. I’m feeling kinda punk (unwell). We don’t want to queer (jeopardize) the deal. Something seemed hinky (strange) about it. Everything’s copacetic (okey-dokey). ---

I actually heard “disingenuous” come out of my mouth the other day. “Vicissitude” and “verisimilitude” have also crept out, as has “pastiche.” Sure, I have a decent vocabulary, but these words stick out like a sore thumb. To make matters worse, I tend to make this Scooby-Doo-like “rowh?” expression when an odd word just jumps into a sentence I’m saying. Speaking of Scooby-Doo, “yoiks!” and “jinkees!” have occasionally punctuated social events in my presence. “Wilkommen” with a German accent, has somehow come to mean “you’re welcome” to me, despite the fact that I speak no German. Similarly, “Was ist das?” has come to mean “What’s wrong?” to me, despite the fact that it actually means “What is that?” Actually, there are too many to count. But then, I am crazy. ---

“Nostrificate” it means to accept as one’s own. “Nid-nod”- to nod continuously. “Boondoggle”- to carry out useless work. I tend to talk in a florid, wordy manner. ---

For some reason I have gotten into the habit of saying “eighty-six” something when I mean “throw it out”. Similarly, “deep six”, “circular file”, “shit-can”. To my continued astonishment, co-workers don’t seem to know what these mean. “Kyfe”, like a deal-breaker, as in “Well, the thing that finally kyfed it was that she was actually a man in drag, so I got the hell outta there.” I used to say “Gerry-mander” all the time until another wordy pointed it out to me that I was using it wrong (horror upon horror). “Large”, similar to “big-time”, as in, wow, that meeting wiped me out, large.
