It’s not necessary to quote the **entire ** OP.
I certainly didn’t mean to imply that the edit function should be enabled, just that the lack of such a function makes follow-up posts almost inevitable at times.
Yeah, I know. And as far as I’m concerned, people can quintuple-post, if that’s the price of inability to pull the rug out from under a dispute by changing the post(s) that triggered it.
As a nit-pick:
That wasn’t a repeat, it was an upgrade:

Kitten threads must always include links to pictures of kittens.
Even when posting about cats that are not kittens, pictures are required. Let no cat topic poster think they are absolved from posting pictures due to the age of their pet.
Non-cat nitpicks and arguements may resume.
But Coca-Cola really did leak out of my nose! No, really! And instead of just saying that I laughed out loud, well, I refered (is that spelled right?) to the fact that I shouldn’t imbibe cola when reading Skald the Rhymer’s posts.
What I really want to know about is this pie stuff. What’s the unwritten rule about pie? I mean, if people really aren’t going to send pie, then they shouldn’t say they’re going to, because I have better things to do than sit by the front door waiting for a pie delivery.
And what’s “leet speek?”
Unwritten rules around this joint - Announcements of your leaving are not particularly interesting to anyone else here. Announcing that you’re leaving because of mod/admin/Chicago Reader behaviour are even less interesting. Just go.
Voicing non-politically correct opinions is a no-no. In your part of the world, you may see a certain condition every day of your life, but to post that it exists will be inviting a pile-on and being labelled a bigot.
On the other hand, you can say almost anything here if you choose your words extremely carefully (except for non-PC opinions). It makes for great exercise in precision word-smithing.

Some places though have the edit function available for a limited time-say, an hour or so after one posts. I think that would be fair.
Why does that bother you? I’ll admit to doing three in a row occasionally, sometimes more, just because it’s so much easier to quote each post individually and respond to it, rather than having to go back up the thread and select, copy, and paste. This is especially true when there is a long thread involved. If I have time, and can be bothered, I’ll consolidate my responses, but I don’t feel obligated to. After all, my main objective is usually to exchange information, not to make my posts look pretty.
I also have little compunction against posting repeatedly if I happen to remember some significant point I left out of a previous post. If we had an edit function, I’d be happy to use that, but we don’t.
Just speaking for myself here, but I always assume that a post that starts without a quote (like this post) is a reply to the post above it. I also don’t always bother to check the name of the poster - not if I get caught up in the conversation. As a result, several posts in a row by the same poster will often seem like some weird, one-sided conversation, which can be kind of confusing. I often have to force myself to stop reading, scroll up, figure out who’s who and then read the damn thing again. It’s annoying.

An hour is way way too much. Some debates or Pit threads rack up ten to twenty posts in that time.
Another unwritten rule-
If you’re the OP, please return to the thread you started and reply at least once.
Especially if you have asked advice or a question.
Especially of people wrote long, well thought out replies to your OP.
It doesn’t happen too often, but it drives me batty when it does.
There you go folks, don’t make me tell you twice.
Any thread of 75 or more posts must contain at least one reference to a Monty Python sketch. Or it will be closed for being too silly.
Unless it’s the MMP. Which is absolutely too silly, yet allowed to get over 5 pages every week. It’s too silly on purpose.

That’s a good one. People starting an OP and just abandoning it drives me nuts, too - it just seems so darned rude. Like asking someone a question and then walking away as they’re answering it.
Regarding grammar/spelling police - we will indeed correct grammar/spelling, etc., but it is considered poor form to attack what is obviously a typo (especially during an argument).

True, but I think a ten to twenty minute time frame wouldn’t hurt.
I wasn’t prepared for that. :dubious:
Nobody expects the Batman.
Here’s an unwritten rule that’s sure to ruffle a few feathers, but is very true: You are not allowed to post comments critical of Isreal or Isreali government policies. Anyone who does so will be accused of being an anti-semitic bigot and/or a terrorist sympathizer.

But they will also be defended if their complaints are merited or fairly presented.
Related ongoing pit thread: I’m fed up with anti-antisemitism and pro-antiarabism on this board.

From Unca Cece: “What the heck is Leetspeek?”
Say, what’s the proper way to emphasize a word here? Agreed, it can easily be overdone, but sometimes I’d like to put a little extra oomph on a word. Am I the only one with this need? I should stifle it?

I recommend the use of italics, a capability that we have here, not being limited to simple text!
Good, because otherwise I was thinking about using Comic Sans.
Another unwritten no-no on this board, no?
