Update your fucking web site, loser!

No you didn’t. But I’m trying to get through to you how much effort it is to update a web page every single day. Maybe he’s too busy answering shitty e-mails all day long. Maybe

You wrote these words. What part can you not understand?

And why haven’t you set up that www.ezboard.com site yourself?

To you I repeat back your own words

Seeing as how I am too technilogically challenged to even HAVE a website, never mind that fact that no one would be interested in it if I DID have one…

I wouldn’t gripe. I think it is nice that he has one at ALL.

Just me.

I don’t mind if someone has a website and doesn’t update it. God knows my stupid personal site hasn’t been touched in a long time… But, if your site is supposed to be a ‘current events’ type of site, you should make sure it is updated. If you can’t, at least put up a notice that it won’t be updated for a while.

Have some pride in your work. I know a guy with a website that is supposed to be filled with current events of various sorts. His only contribution for the last six months are statements of how he can’t update the site, the same excuses over and over. It’s unbelievably lame. All of his info is useless because it’s too old, and there’s no reason to ever go back to visit, it’s a shame, really, because the site had promise.

This reminds me of when I had a message board on my site. I started it because I thought it would help with repeat visitors and eventually maybe win me some more regular clients. It cost me about $5/month (because I wanted it with no ads) and I had to police it constantly. All it ended up doing was being a contest for a bunch of pre-teens and unemployed college students (not that there’s anything inherantly wrong with that) to post whatever they could and see how long it would take me to delete it, edit, change their posts, or get banned. And post nasty messages about me for no obvious reason.

So I got sick of paying money to be abused and waste my time, since the people buying art from me never used the board, but when I told them I was closing the board I got a bunch of threatening messages, whining, and “Well, now I have no reason to visit your site anymore!” crap. Because apparently some people thought that because I have a website, I should be obligated to pay out of pocket so that they can post inane bullshit and inappropriate pictures all day, even though none of those people ever made any meaningful (read: any) contribution to me, my site, or my pocketbook.

I’ve also had idiots write me to say that since I had such a popular site that got so much traffic, that I should make part of the site so that other artists could post their work too. And that individual got quite angry and nasty when I suggested that those other artists could make their own website for their own artwork and pay for it out of their own pockets.

I haven’t updated my LiveJournal in weeks and I occasionally get people writing me to complain about it, because they like to read it for some reason or another. But if I’m too busy or too broke to have time to update it, that’s the way it happens. Unless you’re buying something from me, you’re a guest, and as such, you’ll get updates as my resources permit me posting them. Amusingly enough, the people that buy things from me never complain about my site at all, except maybe to ask if I’m going to post new artwork soon.

Sorry for the hijack, this sort of thing just really pisses me off. It’s a lot of work and money to run a website, especially a popular one, and you have no right to make demands of someone who is providing a free service (entertainment/info/whatever) to you.

Or, conversely, you could get off your lazy ass and create a website that performs to your high, exacting standards, rather than bitching to the guy providing a free service.

I had a website that I created solely for my own benefit. It had a number of reference materials and I had it so that if I was on the road or something, I could look them up without schlepping a bunch of books around.

I have no problem when other people used the site as well, but I got sick of whiney leeches like you bitching that it wasn’t to their satisfaction, so I password protected it and now no-one but me can see it.

Heh and those same assh*les who were bitching that it wasn’t good enough then started whining that my “not good enough” site was gone.

Really, he owes you NOTHING and, were I him, a “f*ck off and die” would have been the total response you would have gotten from me. I don’t have any idea where you have this bizarre sense that he’s somehow obligated to you but here’s a clue, Chuckles, he don’t owe you nuthin’.

I am constantly astounded by the selfishness of some people. The guy provides a free* service and you have the f*cking audacity to bitch that he’s not providing enough free stuff?

Fenris

*if this is a pay-site, and you were a paying member, I take it all back.

I have a friend that is a partner in a fairly large website with a pretty successful message board. People bitch all the time (the ones that don’t pay) , he’s got an standard email that he sends to them.

"Dear So and So,

Thank you for letting us know your opinion of thiswebsite.com. We will give your complaint the attention it deserves. We are also glad to remind you that you are entitled to a full refund should you continue to be dissatisfied with our service"

Or something of that sort.

Yeah. Awhile back, I set up an autoresponder that said something to the effect of “Thank you for contacting us. Your email will be ignored in the order it was recieved.” But people didn’t seem to get it. There’s also a whole section on our faq that says:

Still, 95% of the emails we get are people asking us to book their band or review their MP3s, or complaining that we either demanded to be unsubcribed from their dumbass mailing list or that we gave their shitty CD the piss poor review that it deserved.

People also seem to think that because we provide one free service, we’re somehow obligated to do everything in our power to make sure every dumbass band in a five state region gets promoted. I actually got a mail today from some upstart site, that’s comptetition of a sort, except for the fact that it doesn’t offer the slightest iota of anything interesting or original at all, demanding that we “support the scene” and provide them with a link on our front page, for free. Hey dumbass: we’ve got a links page just for you. You can add the link yourself, even, just like everybody else. I don’t know who the fuck you are, and you sure as hell haven’t done me any favors, so why the fuck should I spend a single second of my free time helping you out?

I mean, shit, if I actually like a particular band or zine or art collective or whatever, I’ll pimp for them till I turn blue, but fuck you if you think I owe you something for nothing. Assholes.

Sorry for the hijack. People suck.

Shit bag? How clever. Obviously we are dealing with a high intellect here. Must be, since you can make assumptions that have no basis in reality.

The SDMB did indeed crash for several weeks about a year ago. During that time, I didn’t bitch. I didn’t rant. I just checked to see if it was running, and when it wasn’t, I move on with my life. See, I’m not a gigantic loser who bases his life on some other guy’s free website and then whines and moans and curses the heavens when that guy doesn’t update his free website as often as I like.

So, in the end, “shitbag,” don’t open your pointless, ignorant mouth again about this until you stop relying on other people to provide you with entertainment for free and get off your ass and create your own website if you are so very unsatisfied with this guys. But I’m sure you won’t, since its easier for fucks like you to sit and complain than to actually do something about it. Now go get a bag of potato chips and watch some more TV.
