> Not at all. I’m saying that he was not widely viewed as an authentic psychokinetic not that he never presented himself as one. Taking his powers seriously is an integral part of the act. Professional wrestlers presented themselves as authentic as well but really no one believed that they were which was proven once they dropped the act and the genre didn’t die. People just didn’t care. They like being entertained.

Geller sued Randi and some other people for suggesting that his powers were just stage magic, contrary to his claims that he had paranormal abilities. Clearly, he was commited to selling the story that he had ESP, and not just when doing his stage act. Suing Randi for claiming that Geller wasn’t a psychic ended up costing Geller thousands of dollars. I’m going to quote this from Wiki, although some of the links are dead and I’m too tired to scrounge up newer material -

> The Truth About Uri Geller, originally published as The Magic of Uri Geller in 1975, is a 1982 book by magician and skeptic James Randi about alleged psychic Uri Geller.
> In the book, Randi challenges Geller's assertions that he performs paranormal feats. Randi explores Geller's background as a stage magician and explains how Geller's spoon bending can be easily reproduced by any magician using sleight of hand.

> In 1991 Geller filed a $15 million lawsuit against Randi and the Committee for the Scientific Investigation of Claims of the Paranormal (CSICOP) over slander concerning Randi’s statements that Geller had “tricked even reputable scientists” with tricks that “are the kind that used to be on the back of cereal boxes when I was a kid”.[1] The court dismissed the case and Geller had to eventually settle the case at a cost of $120,000.[1]
>
> In February 1992, Geller sued Randi, Prometheus and local book distributors in London, England for libel concerning The Magic of Uri Geller.[2] The lawsuit centered on the sentence: “He began his career as a stage magician in Israel where he was once arrested for claiming his feats were performed with psychic power”, since Geller had not been arrested but merely sued. The publisher issued an erratum that changed the phrase “he was once arrested” to “he was once sued”.[2] Randi commented in 1993 that “My position is that I made an unintended factual error in misinterpreting the words ‘brought to court’ and ‘guilty’ as ‘arrested,’ and that this was done without malice or reckless disregard for the truth.”[2] Geller lost this case as well and had to pay Randi’s legal fees.[2]

Later, Geller turned to dowsing and made money that way -

Uri’s Wiki page has a whole section covering his claims about his so called paranormal abilities.

> Geller has claimed his feats are the result of paranormal powers[14] given to him by extraterrestrials,[39] but critics such as James Randi have shown that Geller’s tricks can be replicated with stage magic techniques.[16][21]
>
> In the early 1970s, an article in The Jerusalem Post reported that a court had ordered Geller to refund a customer’s ticket price and pay court costs after finding that he had committed fraud by claiming that his feats were telepathic.[12] In addition, a 1974 article also hints at Geller’s abilities being trickery.[40] The article alleged that his manager Shipi Shtrang and Shipi’s sister Hannah Shtrang secretly helped in Geller’s performances.[40][41] Eventually, Geller married Hannah and they had children.[42]
>
> The parapsychologist Andrija Puharich met Geller in 1971 and endorsed him as a genuine psychic. Under hypnosis, Geller claimed he was sent to earth by extraterrestrials from a spaceship fifty-three thousand light years away.[43][44] Geller would later deny the space-fantasy claims, but affirmed there “is a slight possibility that some of my energies do have extraterrestrial connection.”[45] Puharich also stated that Geller teleported a dog through the walls of his house. However, science writer Martin Gardner wrote as “no expert on fraud was there as an observer” then nobody should take the claim of Puharich seriously.[46]

Now that we’re into the internet age, Geller is hedging on his claims of supernatural abilities … sort of, in foreign language papers.

> [@](#):
>
> Since the publication of his first book, My Story in 1975,[60] he claimed that his wealth originated from being commissioned as a mineral-dowser and not from bending spoons and forks.[citation needed] In 2007, skeptics observed that Geller appeared to have dropped his claims that he does not perform magic tricks. Randi highlighted a quotation from the November 2007 issue of the magazine Magische Welt (Magic World) in which Geller said: “I’ll no longer say that I have supernatural powers. I am an entertainer. I want to do a good show. My entire character has changed.”[61] In a later interview, Geller told Telepolis, “I said to this German magazine, so what I did say, that I changed my character, to the best of my recollection, and I no longer say that I do supernatural things. It doesn’t mean that I don’t have powers. It means that I don’t say ‘it’s supernatural’, I say ‘I’m a mystifier!’ That’s what I said. And the skeptics turned it around and said, ‘Uri Geller said he’s a magician!’ I never said that.”[62] In that interview, Geller further explained that when he is asked how he does his stunts, he tells children to “Forget the paranormal. Forget spoon bending! Instead of that, focus on school! Become a positive thinker! Believe in yourself and create a target! Go to university! Never smoke! And never touch drugs! And think of success!”[62]

In conclusion, Uri Geller is a sketchy dude and he’s still trying to claim that he’s a real psychic _wink wink stay in school, kids!_

First, thank you so much for not only posting the links but pointing out the relevan parts. I appreciate that.

That post definitely says he’s sketchy though I had already called him worse. The part about the mineral dousing was what I was waiting to hear. That is not entertainment that is a con thus he’s a conman. I stand corrected.

He sells this book: [https://www.amazon.co.uk/Uri-Gellers-Crystal-Pendulum-Dowsing/dp/1842931946/279-1142257-5967407?ie=UTF8&qid=1241604479&ref\_=sr\_1\_3&s=books&sr=8-3](https://www.amazon.co.uk/Uri-Gellers-Crystal-Pendulum-Dowsing/dp/1842931946/279-1142257-5967407?ie=UTF8&qid=1241604479&ref_=sr_1_3&s=books&sr=8-3)

Which is nonsense about dowsing, so I’d suppose he’s charging for his dowsing “expertise” in that sense, even if he was just lying about making money via dowsing for minerals.

Every time his name comes up you react as if it’s the first time and all the previous threads and posts never happened. Uri is a lying, cheating fraud, and it is not necessary to disprove every single one of his many, _many_ extraordinary claims to show this. He is not just a performer.

> This kit teaches you basic skills you need to dowse using a crystal pendulum or divining rods. It then explains how to use these skills to find lost objects, water, fossils, oil, treasures and archaeological remains. Uri Geller reveals how dowsing can help you on the path to success, health and happiness.

This is remarkably worded to be able to cover himself while marketing,

Yes, the kit very well can teach the skills needed to dowse. After reading the book you will know how to tie a crystal to a stick and wave it around.

You can indeed use these skills to find lost objects etc. You can also just walk around, pick a spot, start digging and find these things and with similar results but you can use the dowsing skills too.

Sure it can help you on the path to success, health and happiness… If you are sedintary and this gets you to be around the things you’re looking for, which are not presumably in your house, then it will indeed up your chances somewhat of finding success and the exercise will help your health and if you don’t think about how silly you look, a nice stroll outdoors might indeed make you feel happy.

What facts have you presented that you are prepared to stand by? It’s my recollection that these threads tend to run along the lines of the skeptics being challenged on trivial points and even if they were completely wrong about them, this would provide no positive evidence in favour of dowsing or any other paranormal skill, however one wishes to define the term.

No, it’s pseudoskeptics being challenged on serious errors. They make wild, hysterical accusations against Uri Geller. Then they throw a tantrum when I tell them the real facts.

Yes, well this is the standard pseudoskeptic tactic. When their claims are challenged, accuse the challenger of supporting the paranormal.

It is, of course, a complete misunderstanding of my point.
Just to clarify my point: Uri Geller is an entertainer, specifically a magician performing conjuring tricks on stage. He does not really have any paranormal powers.

His act is no different to that of any magician. It’s no more real, and it’s no more fraudulent either. If you call him a fraud, then you also must make the same accusation against any magician who performs the linking rings, or the floating ball.

Whern a sensible sceptic sees Uri Geller perform, the response is “Oh, what a clever and entertaining magic trick that is, I wonder how he did it.” Accusations of fraud come only from the most ill-informed of pseudos.

Granting the existence of “pseudoskeptcs” and the accuracy of your description of their reactions for the sake of argument, what “real facts” have you told them?

> [@](#):

Well, more accurately, I challenge your challenges of the challenges of the paranormal. By definition, this does not constitute support on your part for the paranormal. Indeed, it cannot. Similarly, nitpicking challenges to evolution do not and cannot constitute proof for creationism.

I’m happy to agree that Geller has no paranormal powers (indeed that paranormal powers don’t actually exist until proven otherwise), but this is quite different from what Geller has been _claiming_ over the decades, and what many suckers have been fooled into believing.

Basically, I don’t understand the point of your argument. We’re criticizing Geller, but we’re doing so in a way that is not to your liking, or something? Is proving us wrong that important to you? Why?

If you recall, the reference was to previous threads about this subject.

See those threads for the facts I presented.

I’m attempting to fight your ignorance, which is the whole point of the message board.

Also, a point that the pseudos never understand. Their actions are counter-productive and damaging to real sceptics. They tell lies about dowsers/ psychics/ Uri geller/ etc in the belief that it will help to discredit them. But their lies are transparent and fool nobody. It is real sceptics that are hurt by this behaviour.

Also, if you read factually wrong information here, and then go repeating it you just might end up getting sued. As such, it is my duty to to correct factual errors.

Is that reason enough?

How about correcting the factual errors about the questions you made about Uri’s dowsing claims that we have asked about previously?

They are only errors in your mind.

It’s also trivial nit-picking even by your standards.
